WHO'S PLAYING?

Natashe Seale

Whether performing much loved vintage tunes with a contemporary twist, cool soul classics or skipping breezily over latin rhythms, vocalist, actor and songwriter Natasha Seale has found her musical ‘home’ in the jazz music that inspired her as a teenager growing up on the South Coast. Possessing a timeless vocal quality and enticing her audiences beyond the music is her trade mark. Deftly, she leads her listeners on an all encompassing journey of discovery, with fun-loving flecks.

Natasha’s brand-new show ‘Universal Ellington” is a compelling weave of narrative with song (arrangements by Pete Long) paying homage to the great collabotator, pianist and bandleader. The show follows the success of ‘A Life in Song’ which saw Natasha fronting an all-star band in celebration of the life and music of the iconic vocalist Rosemary Clooney.

Described by ‘Bebop Spoken Here’ as a “Jazz Lady at Heart”, over the years, she has amassed an impressive list of credits including as leading lady in London’s West End (‘Les Miserables’, ‘Aspects of Love’, ‘Mamma Mia’) and ‘Despina’ in Glyndebourne’s Hip H’Opera ‘School4Lovers’.

A Masters graduate from Bath Spa & graduate of LIPA, Natasha effortlessly stepped into the world of acoustic jazz and pop music with the release of her critically acclaimed, self-penned debut album A Bigger Sky. Raised by the sea, in musically vibrant households, her mother, a Welsh pianist/opera singer, taught piano and coached singers, in the music room next door. Pop, Soul music, Sounds of Blackness and….Liane Carroll…were huge influences as a teen. An enduring love affair ensued with Ella, Sarah, and Tina May; the music of the Gershwin brothers & the Great American Songbook. Natasha continues to delve deeper into the real, ressonating works of classic and contemporary songwriters, pulling you into the joy of the moment.

Alan Barnes

Alan Barnes is a prolific international performer, composer, arranger, bandleader and touring soloist. He is best known for his work on clarinet, alto and baritone sax, where he combines a formidable virtuosity with a musical expression and collaborative spirit that have few peers. His range and brilliance have made him a “first call” for studio and live work since his precocious arrival on the scene more than thirty years ago.

His recorded catalogue is immense. He has made over thirty albums as leader and co-leader alone, and the list of his session and side-man work includes Bjork, Bryan Ferry, Michel LeGrande, Clare Teale, Westlife, Jools Holland and Jamie Cullum. He has toured and played residencies with such diverse and demanding figures as Ruby Braff, Freddie Hubbard, Scott Hamilton, Warren Vache, Ken Peplowski, Harry Allen and Conte Candoli.

In British jazz, Alan was recognized – and hired – by the established greats of the time: Stan Tracy, John Dankworth, Kenny Baker, Bob Wilber, and Humphrey Lyttelton. But he is equally respected for his longstanding and fruitful collaborations with contemporaries such as David Newton, Bruce Adams, and Martin Taylor. Alan’s unique musicianship, indefatigable touring, and warm rapport with audiences have made him uniquely popular in British jazz. He has been the recipient of countless British Jazz Awards and has twice been made BBC Jazz Musician of the Year.

Gareth Williams

“One of the most intensely creative, dynamic and exciting performers on the UK scene, Gareth Williams has been receiving increasing critical and public acclaim since becoming a professional musician in the early 90s. An electrifying performer, he has been described as “…a fantastic improviser” (John Fordham - The Guardian) and “If you’ve seen Williams perform, you’ll know that he’s the embodiment of creative energy, with a keyboard command that’s both impressive and well-directed” (Peter Vacher, Jazzwise). Gareth’s first major professional engagement was as keyboard player/MD for jazz hip-hop band Us3. He performed with the band on a world tour in 1993 and appears on their album ‘Broadway & 52nd’ (Blue Note). Gareth has since worked as pianist/MD for internationally acclaimed jazz singer Claire Martin and has worked with many international jazz greats, including Art Farmer, George Coleman, Bud Shank, James Moody and Dave Liebman, plus a host of top British musicians. “

Marianne Windham

The founder and driving force behind Guildford Jazz, and co-founder of Fleet Jazz, Marianne Windham took up playing bass later in life, and left a successful career as Director of a software consultancy to pursue learning bass full time. She has since become established on the scene and has performed with many of the UK’s leading jazz musicians including Alan Barnes, Steve Waterman, Mark Nightingale, Sara Dowling, Derek Nash, Dave O’Higgins and many others.

Dave Barry

Dave Barry was born in Cardiff and moved to London in the late 60's, studying percussion at the Royal Academy of Music alongside Pete Jacobsen and Stan Sulzman who were there at the same time. Like Chris Biscoe Dave Barry joined Mike Westbrook in 1979 working with his various ensembles and big band touring Europe and Australia. For twelve years Dave Barry was a member of the Tim Whitehead Quartet, with Pete Jacobsen and Arnie Somoygi. He was a member of Don Weller's Quartet and Big Band for over sixteen years and his gilt-edged CV features the cream of British Jazz.
