WILDFLOWER QUINTET

Wild Flower Quintet celebrates the 60th anniversary of Wayne Shorter’s classic recordings for Blue Note Records with an all-star line-up. Led by saxophonist Matt Anderson, the group plays original music inspired by Shorter’s sound and approach, alongside new arrangements of both his classic and lesser-known compositions. Their 2015 album Wild Flower was described by Selwyn Harris in Jazzwise as "Their own unique stamp on Shorter's very personal repertoire... of a quality that resonates with its inspirational source... Enjoyably un-pretentious."

Born in the North Yorkshire Moors, the son of a music teacher, saxophonist and Dankworth Prize-winning composer Matt Anderson has lived in London since 2015. Since his debut with Wild Flower, he has made three further albums with the Matt Anderson Quartet, with the latest Live at Leeds Jazz Festival released in 2024 to glowing reviews, including four stars in Jazzwise, and airplay on BBC Radio 3. Extensive touring with this group has also seen them perform in venues like Jamboree, Barcelona and Bimhuis, Amsterdam.

Becoming part of the fertile jazz scene in the capital, Anderson has performed with artists/bands such as the Gareth Lockrane Big Band, Jamie Doe’s The Magic Lantern, Will Vinson and Ivo Neame. He has also toured in New Zealand, Eastern Europe and Scandinavia. In 2023, he was made an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music for contributions to the music industry, and he is proud to be a D’Addario artist.

With Matt Anderson – Tenor Saxophone, Quentin Collins - Trumpet, Sam Watts – Piano , Sam Gardner – Drums , and Marianne WIndham guesting on bass

"This is sophisticated stuff, with a proper handle on Shorter's post-bop genius... Everyone plays superbly and the whole set is wholly recommended." Jazz Journal *****

“a well-integrated, swinging and supremely confident ensemble… [with] a soulful depth to his musicality that underpins the academic attention to detail” Jazzwise ****

Matt Skelton’s Blackhawk Quintet: A CELEBRATION OF sHELLEY mANNE
Sept

Matt Skelton’s Blackhawk Quintet: A CELEBRATION OF sHELLEY mANNE

A night of cool jazz in tribute to one of the greats of the West Coast scene of the 1950s, Shelly Manne - an extraordinary and unique artist, who has left an immense legacy of collaborations and recordings. A precise, creative, and individual drummer, he was dynamic and always deeply swinging.

This show celebrates his quintet, and their particular contribution to the Shelly Manne canon. A swinging, tight-knit unit, energised with joyful, unselfish and virtuosic participation, with Shelly’s beat, responsive encouragement, and supportive leadership always at the heart of matters. The centrepiece of the music is inspired by a clutch of golden quintet performances captured live at The Black Hawk Jazz Club in San Francisco between 22 and 24 September 1959.

The members of Matt Skelton’s band have been hand-picked for the way they connect with, and are inspired by, their corresponding original artists. They aim to express their own originality and collective inspiration, with the Manne Blackhawk quintet as their DNA framework. This stellar line-up comprises Jim Davison (trumpet), Mark Crooks (tenor sax), Leon Greening (piano), Conor Chaplin (double bass), and Matt Skelton (drums & leader).

“Skelton’s playing recalls the great legendary piano trio recordings of music from the movies…. he displays tremendous talent and musicality” — Peter Erskine (Weather Report)

  • The Guildhall, 131 High Street Guildford Surrey GU1 3AA (map)

A rare opportunity to step inside Abbott’s Hospital with live jazz in the Courtyard from The Alvar Treefrogs !

Born out of an idea to breathe life into music long forgotten, music that made the streets of New Orleans a place to dance and party to in the 20s, 30s and 40s, music that is so hip you’ll want to hop around and dance to it.

The band was born on Alvar Street, New Orleans, where one night, tired and happy, we listened to the Treefrogs singing their song. It then took 8 years to find the right musicians and to get the music just right. The players needed to swing, sing and love a frog based pun. We found them!!! Ever wanted to sing about eggs and butter, about Garbage Men, about your Aunt Tilly? We are your band!!

Entry is free, just come in and listen anytime between 2.15 and 4pm

Janette Mason: ReWired

“Mixing deep grooves, gutsy swing, and unforgettable melody!”

For her release, ReWired, Janette Mason has selected a basket full of all the tunes that mean the most to her, from timeless standards to modern chart classics, and reworked each of them with her long-time collaborators Tom Mason on bass and Eric Ford on drums.

With Janette at the helm, the original tunes’ irresistible melodic personalities are daringly expanded and reconfigured by the trio so that they delight the listener anew with the depth and sophistication of jazz while retaining the direct appeal of pop.

No-one is off limits and the repertoire draws from everyone from Gary Numan and David Bowie to Kate Bush and Olivia Rodrigo, with Janette’s fierce and inventive arrangements pulling everything together. Mixing deep grooves, gutsy swing, blazing solos and unforgettable melody, this is timeless music re-wired for the present day!

NICK SMART QUINTET FEAT. EMMA RAWICZ - THE MUSICAL LIFE OF KENNY WHEELER
Oct

NICK SMART QUINTET FEAT. EMMA RAWICZ - THE MUSICAL LIFE OF KENNY WHEELER

Trumpeter and composer Kenny Wheeler (1930–2014) was one of the most enigmatic and influential musicians in recent memory. His instantly recognisable sound was a driving force within every major innovation in modern European jazz during the last half of the 20th century.

After Kenny’s death in 2014, Nick Smart, Head of Jazz at the Royal Academy of Music and an internationally renowned jazz educator, trumpeter and musical director, embarked on a 10 year labour of love to produce a biography of Kenny Wheeler which manages to take in its stride the vast amount of work he undertook in a long career, and to cast light on the individuality of his playing and writing styles. Published earlier this year by Equinox Publishing, this exemplary biography is as much a perspective on the history and development of jazz in Britain and Europe as it is the extraordinary tale of this improbable pioneer.

In collaboration with Guildford Book Festival, we are delighted to welcome Nick Smart and his stellar band which also features rising star EMMA RAWICZ on tenor saxophone (Winner of Jazz Newcomer of the Year at the 2022 Parliamentary Jazz Awards and BBC Young Musician Jazz finalist ), and renowned guitarist JOHN PARRICELLI, to celebrate the music and life of Kenny Wheeler in words and music.

WHO'S PLAYING?

Nick Smart - Trumpet/Flugel

Head of Jazz at the Royal Academy of Music, Nick Smart is an internationally renowned jazz educator, trumpeter and musical director who has given guest masterclasses and performances around the world. In 2013 he was the winner of the prestigious Parliamentary Award for Jazz Education. In the UK he is recognised as one of the leading musicians on the London jazz scene, where as well as being in regular demand as a sideman to players of all generations, he continues to record and tour with his own projects.

In 2005 Nick released his debut album “Remembering Nick Drake” to critical acclaim. The album featured Smart’s arrangements of Nick Drake’s music played by an all star line-up including John Parricelli, Paul Clarvis, Christine Tobin and Stan Sulzmann amongst others. It was described by Straight No Chaser magazine as “…a future classic because it really captures all that is best about British jazz….” and by John Fordham in Jazz UK as “…fascinating music devoted to a fascinating inspiration.” In December 2008 Nick released his highly praised trio album “Remembering Louis Armstrong” featuring Hans Koller and Paul Clarvis. His latest band, Nick Smart’s Trogon, merges contemporary jazz sounds with Afro Cuban concepts and is due for release on Babel Records in November 2013.

His versatility as a trumpet player has allowed him to perform alongside many international jazz stars including George Russell, Bob Brookmeyer, John Hollenbeck, the New York Voices, Mike Gibbs and Dave Douglas, as well as most of the leading names on the UK jazz scene. Amongst other things Nick is currently a member of the Kenny Wheeler Big Band, in a new quartet from saxophonist Stan Sulzmann and just recorded for the new album of vocalist Christine Tobin in her interpretations of Leonard Cohen songs. As an acclaimed musical director of large ensembles, Nick conducts the Stan Sulzmann Big Band (Neon Orchestra) and the Troyka large ensemble, “Troykestra”. He also performs internationally as the regular soloist with the James Taylor Quartet.

Emma Rawicz - Tenor Saxophone

Jamie Cullum calls British saxophonist Emma Rawicz "an astonishing talent", Jazzwise Magazine "a force to be reckoned with", and the BBC: "the name Emma Rawicz is on everyone's lips right now".

Despite her young age of 22, she has already achieved an enormous amount: at 19 Rawicz independently released her critically acclaimed debut album, “Incantation” and singlehandedly managed an extensive UK release tour, including headline appearances at prestigious venues including the Jazz Cafe and Ronnie Scott's. Since then her international career has flourished, playing in over 15 countries, with extensive tours in Germany and Scandinavia in particular. In 2023 she made her label debut with one of the most important jazz labels in the world today, ACT, releasing her album “Chroma” to international acclaim, notably with the album being selected as the Guardian Album of the Month: “With ‘Chroma’ young British jazz star Emma Rawicz is taking admirable risks and continuing her warp-speed evolution ****” .

Rawicz’s achievements have been recognised: she is a winner of a Parliamentary Jazz Award, finalist at the Jazz FM Awards and the BBC Young Jazz Musician Competition. The Royal Academy of Music recently awarded Rawicz the Musician’s Company Silver Medal for excellence and contribution to the institution, an award not previously given to a jazz student.

Rawicz’s musical endeavours are broad: she tours with a range of projects, from duo with internationally renowned pianist Gwilym Simcock, to her regular touring quartet made up of stars of the UK jazz scene, to her 20-piece Jazz Orchestra, which she singlehandedly manages as well as composing and arranging exciting original music.

Rawicz has already had the privilege of working in important roles with some high profile festivals and established ensembles: in 2023 she was the Cambridge Jazz Festival’s Artist in Residence, a role that involved multiple appearances in the festival programme, culminating in a concert leading the Cambridge University Jazz Orchestra in a triumphant end to the festival, playing an all-original programme of Rawicz’s jazz orchestra music as well as a brand new commission for the ensemble. In addition to this, she has featured as a soloist with the BBC Concert Orchestra at Queen Elizabeth Hall in the 2022 London Jazz Festival, and with the German SWR Radio Big Band at a sold out Berlin Philharmonie in February 2024.

Rawicz is also a passionate educator, and is already in demand as a masterclass leader, most recently leading workshops in Denmark, Lithuania and Norway, as well as having a strong educational presence in the UK for musicians of all ages.

John Parricelli - Guitar

Parricelli began his career as a guitarist in 1982 and was one of the founding members of the British big band Loose Tubes, with whom he recorded three albums. He has worked with Annie Whitehead, Kenny Wheeler, Norma Winstone, Lee Konitz, Paul Motian, Tim Whitehead, Chris Laurence, Eddie Parker, Peter Erskine, Vince Mendoza, Mark Lockheart, Julian Argüelles, Iain Ballamy's Acme, Mark Lockheart Quartet, Andy Sheppard, Gerard Presencer, Colin Towns, Martin Speake Quintet and Jazz singer Stacey Kent among others.

James Maddren - Drums

James Maddren is a London, UK-based drummer and composer who hails from Horsham, Sussex, where at age 11 started school at Christ’s Hospital performing in many contrasting bands and orchestras. In 2004 while still at school he traveled to London to study with one of Europe’s top multi-instrumentalists, Jim Hart, who Maddren cites as a significant early influence and inspiration. He went on to study jazz percussion at the Royal Academy of Music with Martin France as his drum tutor. Graduating in 2009 with a 1st class degree James was also given ‘The Principal’s Award For Outstanding Studentship’.

Currently one of the UK’s (and increasingly Mainland Europe’s) first-call young drummers, he enjoys listening to and performing all kinds of music and has shared the stage with many artists and ensembles, including the Gwilym Simcock, Kit Downes Trio, Jacob Collier, Marc Copland/Stan Sulzman Quartet, The Mark McKnight Organ Quartet featuring Seamus Blake, Ivo Neame Group, Phil Donkin, Alex Garnett’s Bunch of Five, Michael Janisch, Will Vinson, Martin Speake Quartet, Phronesis, Jonathan Bratoeff Quartet, Nikkie Iles, Norma Winstone, among others.

Marianne Windham - Bass

The founder and driving force behind Guildford Jazz, Marianne Windham is a distinctive presence on bass. A physicist in a previous life, she left a successful career to pursue playing bass full time, and has since become a well established and in demand player.

About the book

Trumpeter and composer Kenny Wheeler (1930–2014) was one of the most enigmatic and influential musicians in recent memory. His instantly recognisable sound was a driving force within every major innovation in modern European jazz during the last half of the 20th century.

More importantly, his life provides us with a profound example of the way music can manifest itself in the most unlikely of vessels. As a lonely and shy teenager in Canada, he sought refuge from his difficult home life in the friendships he forged through a mutual love of bebop. After an unexpectedly bold move to London at the age of 22, he struggled with his confidence for years before making his first big break with the John Dankworth Orchestra. Kenny would soon find his voice in a triumvirate of musical communities: straight-ahead jazz, the burgeoning free scene, and in the busy recording studios.

Throughout his life, he constantly pursued personal growth while investing in his friends from every corner of the music business who would bring the inimitable beauty, precision, and chaos in his compositions to life. And in an artform where individuality represents the highest level of expression, Kenny was peerless. Indeed, few jazz artists of any era developed such a fingerprint in one area, let alone becoming immediately identifiable as virtuoso instrumentalists, improvisors, and composers.

Kenny Wheeler’s life is a compelling – and fundamentally human – story. This book brings together over 130 original interviews and new archival and biographical research on Wheeler’s life and music, chronicling his journey from small town Canada to international acclaim. It is as much a perspective on the history and development of jazz in Britain and Europe as it is the extraordinary tale of this improbable pioneer.

WHO'S PLAYING?

Enrico Tomasso - trumpet

Enrico Tomasso started playing the trumpet at the age of 5 having been inspired by a recording of Louis Armstrong. When Louis Armstrong paid his final visit to England Tomasso’s father took the 7-year-old Enrico to meet Louis and play for him. Louis Armstrong was greatly impressed and gave the budding trumpet player many tips on playing jazz trumpet. Louis kept in touch with Enrico for the rest of his life. After music college Enrico spent many years working in bands including twelve years with the Pasadena Roof Orchestra, then a long stint with Ray Gelato, and with visiting American players. Among those he has played with are Scott Hamilton, Ken Peplowski, Bucky Pizzarelli, John Dankworth, and Tommy Whittle and the Piazza All Stars.

Enrico has won best trumpet player in the British Jazz Awards six times and continues to be rated at the very top of his profession.

Duncan Hemstock was given his first clarinet and a Benny Goodman cassette when he was 13. Upon hearing the first phrase, he fell in love with Jazz and Swing music and eventually he made his way to the local jazz club. There he learnt from and worked with many talented and experienced musicians, and was lucky to be taught by virtuoso clarinet player Andy Firth. Growing up in Adelaide, he toured in the much loved Royal Garden Jazz band and as a soloist all across Australia.

Now living in London, Duncan is relishing the many opportunities to perform for dancers and concert audiences alike throughout the UK and Europe. He brings his joy for life and music to every performance, always delivering with a smile and a cheeky quip or two. His clarinet playing is not only influenced by Goodman, but also the fiery intent of Edmond Hall, while his Tenor Saxophone approach is inspired by the great Lester Young.

tim whitehead & tony woods quintet

Tim Whitehead  and Tony Woods are two of the UK’s finest saxophonists. Their styles are contrasting yet complementary, and they have been described as “blood brothers in music”. Their close musical affinity is evident in many collaborations, such as their pianoless “Kwartet”.

With fantastic chemistry between these two great players, this will be an evening of exciting and passionate exchanges between two masters. Highly recommended!

Tenor saxophonist Tim Whitehead is renowned throughout the UK, Europe and the USA as a remarkable performer and composer with a dazzling CV. In the 70’s he toured with Ian Carr’s “Nucleus” and “Graham Collier Music” winning the Young Jazz Musician of the Year Award on the way. In the 80’s he was a member of the ground breaking big band Loose Tubes and in the 90’s he made several critically acclaimed albums, winning The Andrew Milne Award for Jazz, as well as the BBC Music Magazine Jazz Album of the Year.

"Whitehead has a highly personal, always gorgeous sound on tenor and an infinite vocabulary - in a country of fine saxophonists he is one of the finest.” Peter Bacon, Jazz CD of the Week, Birmingham Post *****

”There are many fine tenor players on the current British scene but Tim Whitehead is undoubtedly one of the best we have” Peter Lund - Crescendo

A graduate of Leeds College of Music and The Guildhall School of Music, alto saxophonist Tony Woods received awards for saxophone, outstanding performance and the soloist’s prize at the Dunkirk International Jazz Festival. In the mid 90’s, the Tony Woods Project was formed.  It has recorded four highly acclaimed albums of original, folk inspired compositions: High Seas (1997), Lowlands (2004), Wind Shadows (2009) and Hidden Fires (2017). The band has attracted airplay on BBC Radio 3, Jazz FM, UK Jazz Radio, has toured the UK extensively and performed at festivals across the country

During his career, Tim has played extensively throughout the UK and Europe, and more recently in the USA with American pianist Phil DeGreg. In the 70s he toured with Ian Carr’s Nucleus and Graham Collier Music and won the Young Jazz Musicians of the Year Award with his own band South of the Border in 1977.

In the 80’s he was a member of the groundbreaking big band Loose Tubes, and continued to develop his own music, recording for Spotlite Records and Editions EG - English People (1983) and Decision (1987) with his own bands, featuring at different times John Parricelli, Django Bates, Nic France and Pete Jacobsen. In the 90’s he recorded Authentic and Silence Between Waves, on Ronnie Scott’s Jazz House Label with Dave Barry, Pete Jacobsen and Arnie Somogyi, and received The Andrew Milne Award for Jazz, as well as several other commissions during this period. In 1999 Tim released Personal Standards, an album of soul and pop tunes arranged for jazz quartet, which received widespread interest and critical praise including Jazz Album of the Year in the BBC Music Magazine, and led to an educational project at Trinity College of Music under the same title. In 2000, Contemporary composer Colin Riley and Tim won the Peter Whittingham Award to complete and record Tides with the Homemade Orchestra. This was the beginning of a long term collaboration. Since then the HomeMade Orchestra have toured extensively and received several awards and commissions as well as releasing their second album, Inside Covers in 2005.

In 2009 he was the first ever musician Artist in Residence at Tate Britain (funded by an award from The Leverhulme Trust), to research and compose music in response to the work of JMW Turner. During the residency he wrote 'Colour Beginnings', a series of compositions written from transcribed improvisations performed in front of and in response to a selection of JMW Turner's watercolour sketches. The work was performed at Tate Britain in November 2009 following a series of lecture demonstrations in October. The performance was also recorded for release in 2010 and filmed for a profile on the project by Gwynhelek Productions. December 2009 saw a collaboration with Colin Riley and The Royal College Of Music String Orchestra, to perform 'Landscapes With Birds' by Riley for tenor and soprano saxes, which Tim performed with them at St James Church Piccadilly in London , and which was also performed at The Royal College Of Music in January 201

the nicolas meier world group

One of our most popular – and certainly most virtuosic – guests returns to Guildford Jazz with his outstanding band: Nicolas Meier!

His ‘World Group’ has a unique sound, incorporating a meld of Middle Eastern, Turkish, jazz and fusion influences. Meier has had a glittering career, including three years of touring with Jeff Beck and subsequent recordings with Yellowjackets bassist, Jimmy Haslip and Sting/Zappa/everybody! drummer, Vinnie Collaiuta!

The World Group offers a massive range of colours: Nick himself plays various types of guitar (including his masterly work on the fretless and the fretless 11-string!), and the group benefits from the rich sonorities of Richard Jones’ electric violin and the keyboard wizardry of Alex Hutton. Completing the band is the super-versatile bassist, Tom Mason (Gwilym Simcock, Anoushka Shankar, Jamie Cullum, Lily Allen etc.) and the outrageously talented percussionist, Demi Garcia-Sabat!

Nick never fails to woo and wow an audience; this will be fabulous fare, and will be a gig that will sell out quickly. So really folks... BOOK NOW!!!

WHO'S PLAYING?

Andrew Baker

Trombonist, composer, and conductor Andrew Baker, born and raised in London, began performing professionally at the age of 14 and had appeared on recordings and TV shows by the age of 18. During his four years at the Guildhall School of Music, Andy played two seasons with the Covent Garden Festival Orchestra, toured Europe with the Desford Colliery Band and the show Carmen Jones, performed and recorded with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, and began substituting in London’s West End theatres. Although his studies were in orchestral trombone playing, Andy took part in graduate jazz classes and ensembles and conducted his first recital before graduation. Andy spent the next four years touring extensively with the Ray Gelato Giants and freelancing in all aspects of London’s extensive music scene before relocating to Chicago in 2001.

Quickly establishing a reputation as one of the most versatile musicians in town, Andy was a member of Jon Faddis’s Chicago Jazz Ensemble from 2006–2012 and has been a core-member of Fulcrum Point New Music Project since 2010. In the early 2000s, Andy joined the faculties of Northwestern University and Elmhurst College and co-founded the bands BakerzMillion and the New Standard Jazz Orchestra. Returning to school to pursue his interests in education and composition, Andy earned a master’s degree from DePaul University and joined the full-time faculty at the University of Illinois, Chicago in 2012.

Andy appears as a guest artist and clinician across the United States, England, and France and continues to perform and record in jazz, classical, and commercial music. Andy is a Michael Rath Trombones and Denis Wick performing artist.

Mark Lockheart

From Loose Tubes to Polar bear, Mark Lockheart has been a key figure in the development of British jazz. His albums for Edition records are genre and career defining, running the gamut from big band to classical, experimental to electric, his talent knows no bounds.

Saxophonist and composer Mark Lockheart first came to prominence in the mid 1980s with the influential big band Loose Tubes. Although classically trained as a clarinetist and saxophonist Mark’s love of Jazz was always destined to define his artistic direction. In 1992 Mark formed the eclectic co-led quartet Perfect Houseplants, a group that released six albums and collaborated with many adventurous classical artists including the Orlando Consort and violinist Andrew Manze.

The mid-90s saw Mark recording and performing with many jazz, folk and pop artists including Django Bates, Kenny Wheeler, Norma Winstone, June Tabor, Stereolab, Jah Wobble, Robert Wyatt, Prefab Sprout, Don Um Romao, Thomas Dolby, Anja Garbarek and Radiohead.

In 2003 Mark joined Seb Rochford’s Polar Bear, which over a period of twelve years went on to record six ground-breaking albums. The band’s second CD, ‘Held On The Tips Of Fingers,’ was nominated for the 2005 Mercury Award and later appeared in Jazzwise’s ‘100 Albums That Shook the World.’ The band’s fifth album ‘In Each And Every Way’ was also nominated for a Mercury award in 2013.

In 2007 Mark was a featured soloist (along with John Pattitucci and Gwilym Simcock) in Mark Anthony Turnage’s ‘About Water,’ which was premiered at the Southbank in June 2007. Mark collaborated several times more with Turnage, performing his ‘A Man Descending’ with the Southbank Sinfonia in 2008 and more recently as one of the featured musicians in Turnage’s opera ‘Anna Nicole’ which was premiered at the Royal Opera House in London.

In 2009 Mark’s quintet album ‘In Deep’ was released on the Edition record label to critical acclaim – the Manchester Evening News awarded it five stars and said it was ‘the key record of the second golden age of British jazz.’ The following year saw the release of Mark’s first big band album ‘Days Like These’ with the Hamburg-based NDR big band. That same year Mark was awarded APPJC ‘Parliamentary Jazz Musician of the Year 2010.’

In 2013 Mark released ‘Ellington In Anticipation,’ a radical reworking of Ellington melodies with an all-star line up which included Seb Rochford and Liam Noble. The CD of the project had many four and five-star reviews and was MOJO magazine’s ‘Jazz Album of 2013’ and nominated as ‘Best Jazz CD of 2013’ by the APPJC at the 2014 Parliamentary Awards.

An invitation to perform at the New York Rochester Jazz Festival in 2014 led to the formation of ‘Malija’, a trio with bassist Jasper Hoiby and pianist Liam Noble. Malija’s debut album ‘The Day I Had Everything’ was released on Edition in 2015 to critical acclaim and the group’s second CD, entitled ‘Instinct’, was released in 2017 and followed by a 21 date tour.

In 2016 Mark was awarded Jazz FM Instrumentalist of the year at the Jazz FM Awards and was nominated for the British Composer Awards for his composition ’With One Voice’

BEAT: Jazz FUNK DOUBLE BILL feat. motet & The joe garland band

For the final show of the 2nd BEAT Series Guildford Jazz presents a celebration of jazz, funk and soul in a double header gig featuring Motet & The Joe Garland Band, playing Yellowjackets, Al Jarreau, Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars.

MOTET

MOTET brings rich horn arrangements and high energy rhythms to well-known soul and jazz funk songs, from artists such as Patrice Rushen, Snarky Puppy, Tim Akers, Al Jarreau and Stevie Wonder. Composer arranger and drummer, Seb Guard, is the source of much of the band’s creative arrangements, with fellow rhythm section Robin Clayton (bass), David Kirby (keys) and Andy Jackson (guitar) completing an established and highly accomplished unit.

MOTET’s horn section is composed of three highly regarded performers from the Surrey jazz scene: Sam Parker (saxes), Tom Parsons (trumpet) and Stuart Goodburne (trombone). The band delivers a modern, danceable groove that is fresh and uplifting – the essence of the BEAT vibe! Motet is joined by accomplished live performer and in-demand session vocalist, Debby Bracknell. Debby has sung for top artists such as Mariah Carey, Ariana Grande and Shakatak.

The Joe Garland Band

Headed by guitarist Joe Garland, this talented group of young musicians from London perform boisterous, groovy jazz funk and fusion in the vein of the Yellowjackets, John Scofield and Tribal Tech. Joe is one of the most popular acts to have featured in the BEAT series and we are delighted to welcome him back with an 8-piece band made up of fellow graduates from London's music academies.

Joe will perform a mix of originals destined for his first album, some of which are based on tunes composed for previous Boileroom shows. Joe's music represents the essence of the BEAT vibe and we are thrilled he can perform at this final show of this second BEAT Series.

An evening with Denys guarantees a display of unsuppressed expression, ranging from sweet “saxuality” to breathtaking, edge-of-your-seat virtuosity. Over the years, Denys has evolved into what the Time Magazine describes as “the icon of British jazz”, with a most distinctive and immediately recognisable sound.

VIMALA ROWE WITH john etheridge ** SOLD OUT **

Sensational vocalist VIMALA ROWE joins guitar legend JOHN ETHERIDGE, with his the Blue Spirits Trio featuring Pete Whittaker on organ, George Double on drums. and Marianne guesting on bass.

John Etheridge's reputation in the jazz world cannot be overstated. A genuinely virtuosic fusion guitarist, Etheridge is one of a handful of players who can claim to have helped shape the character of modern jazz guitar. He has been described by fellow fretsman Pat Metheny as 'one of the best guitarists in the world', and The Blue Spirits Trio came about through John’s love of electric guitar and organ combined, and a desire for a vehicle for the bluesier side of John’s playing. There are plenty of typical swing elements, augmented by soulful ballads, fiery funk outings all presented with warm humour by John. The band has been popular on the club circuit for many years and always delivers.

John Etheridge and Vimala Rowe scored a resounding critical success with their album ‘Out of the Sky’ ,which was in the Top Ten Critic’s lists for 2016 in both the Guardian and Sunday Times. Vimala is a sensational singer who has mesmerised audiences since she emerged a few years ago and has the same wide ranging skills and tastes as John They are ideal partners, alike in their search for musical adventure and authenticity.

WHO'S PLAYING?

john Etheridge

“No doubting his awesome authority when he touches the guitar” – The Guardian

John Etheridge rightly enjoys a glowing reputation throughout the jazz world and beyond and has been described by Pat Metheny as, “One of the best guitarists in the world”. He is a prodigiously gifted and creative player whose approach to music can only be described as eclectic, his range being well illustrated by his years of touring and recording with Stephane Grappelli while simultaneously doing likewise with the legendary jazz-fusion group, The Soft Machine.

"I never wanted to be a star, just a highly respected musician like John Etheridge" Sting (THE GUARDIAN 1981)

VIMALA ROWE

A Fortuitous meeting in North London brought together legendary guitar veteran John Etheridge and extravagantly talented singer Vimala Rowe, who have developed a highly personal repertoire from an eclectic mix of musics – original and traditional. Both performers have a protean range of influences. Etheridge has over the years worked in contexts from Classical, Jazz to Progressive Rock, whereas Rowe’s span seems almost instinctive – effortlessly absorbing and blending the worlds of all the great soul and jazz singers into a personal mix including Indian Classical, African Folk and Syriac Aramaic.

One of the defining features of the duo’s work is the commitment and passion of their delivery. Rowe is a fiery performer by any standards- yet the paring down to just two produces intimacy and drama alike. Explosive but chambered. The big effect and the delicate gesture. The pieces are carefully chosen to surprise, but above all to take the listener on an emotional journey through joy and pain, sombre or swinging. There’s dark and light. A real musical journey.

“Rowe…A captivating and seemingly effortless soulful voice” KISS FM

pete Whittaker - organ

In a style that draws from Blues, Gospel, Funk as well as Bebop Pete has featured with many of the UK’s top jazz musicians especially in the organ/guitar/drums trio line-up. As such, he aims for a style which is improvisatory and expressive, but firmly tied to an all-pervading groove.

“Pete Whittaker, an object lesson in soulfulness” LONDON JAZZ NEWS

George Double - drums

A favourite with Guildford Jazz audiences, George's playing and recording credits include Dame Shirley Bassey, Grammy Award Winner Jack Jones, Marc Almond, Mica Paris, Ruthie Henshall and Kym Mazelle. His West End and touring theatre record includes stints on Wicked, Guys and Dolls, Avenue Q, Sinatra and Anything Goes.

He is active on the British jazz scene and appears regularly at Ronnie Scott’s club in London and elsewhere as a freelancer (with Chris Ingham, John Etheridge, Art Themen, Digby Fairweather, Derek Nash and many others). He is also curator of Hadleigh and Southwold Jazz Clubs.

“Swinging, pithy and unerringly apt” - MOJO Magazine

WHO'S PLAYING?

“Finally, a special word for Huw Warren’s solo interpretation of Hermeto’s Mente Clara (clear mind), whose emotive, sustained and lush harmonies, combined with pellucid runs, are delivered so affectingly. Words, on this occasion, cannot do it justice”. London Jazz News

“Apart from the joyful pleasure it created in abundance, this concert was a powerful argument for our learning to think and talk purely in terms of ‘music’ and ‘musicians’ rather than jazz or classical music or, indeed, Brazilian music….Glyn Pursglove

Huw Warren

Welsh pianist and composer Huw Warren has achieved an international reputation for innovative and eclectic music making over a thirty year career. Equally at home crossing the often exclusive worlds of Jazz, World and Contemporary music; he has a distinctive and personal voice, and has collaborated with a huge variety of artists worldwide

Huw has recorded 2 albums for ECM (as Quercus with June Tabor and Iain Ballamy) and in 2018 released a solo piano recording Nocturnes and Visions. In 2019 he released 2 albums for Italian label CAM Jazz Everything in Between (with Dudley Phillips and Zoot Warren) and New Day (with Mark Lockheart) His previous albums and projects have included themes and source material as diverse as John Dowland, Plainchant and Hermeto Pascoal. In 2023/2024 he will release two new projects including a new solo piano recording of Choro and a recording of Plygain arrangements with Angharad Jenkins.

His writing style combines quirky rhythmic grooves with simple melodic beauty; and manages to be both complex and approachable.

Benn Clatworthy *SOLD OUT*

From storming post-Coltrane energy to beautiful ballad playing, Los Angeles-based Benn Clatworthy has matured into a truly great tenor player. He was a huge hit with our Guildford Jazz audience on his last visit in 2013 (!), for his emotional playing and his dry sense of humour, we are delighted to welcome him back with a top-class rhythm section featuring the fantastic ALEX HUTTON on piano and MATT HOME on drums.

Playing from the songbook of Blue Note and more contemporary jazz, his tone is extraordinarily beautiful, and his melodic ideas come from the heart. As someone said recently 'It’s as though he’s talking to us and telling us a story through the saxophone!’

Born in Hastings in 1955, grandson of the famous theatre and revue artist, Gertrude Lawrence, Benn Clatworthy grew up in London. As a teenager he took sax lessons from Ronnie Scott who recommended him to Berklee College, Boston. Benn’s distinctive, muscular saxophone and flute feature in his unique arrangements of standards from Cole Porter to Marvin Gaye, John Coltrane to the Beatles. His work credits include such notables as Cedar Walton, Lionel Hampton and Jimmy Cleveland. Benn has released eleven CDs to critical acclaim on both sides of the Atlantic.

“While forty years in Los Angeles seem to have had little effect on expatriate Brit Ben’s Bow Bells speech, his tenor sax playing has acquired strong US characteristics, not least a tough personal tone and a wide emotional range that extends from ballad tenderness to gladiatorial torrents of controlled aggression at fast tempos.” Chris Lee

“…Scattering notes around the room with a deliciously dry loquacity in a fast-moving hard-bop manner” John Fordham

“The band is impressively hip…with a variety of rich melodies, vibrant harmonies and infectious grooves… The optimism of the music shines through like a shaft of sunlight on a winter’s day.” – London Jazz News

Hexagonal is John Donaldson – piano, Greg Heath – tenor sax/flute, Rob Leake - alto/baritone sax, Sid Gauld – trumpet, Simon Thorpe – bass, Joe Edwards – drums

This high energy sextet, with African and Jazz influences, was formed in late 2016, to perform the music of two titans of jazz, drawn from different eras and cultures – 1960s American icon McCoy Tyner and 1980s South African jazz pianist and saxophonist Bheki Mseleku .  The band was an ambition born of love and experience of working and touring with both Bheki and McCoy, which bring an authority and authenticity to the group’s music as well as having a strong influence on their original material.

Since the bands inception it has released its critically acclaimed debut album and has played to enthusiastic audiences at club and festival appearances including  Love Supreme, Scarborough, and Herts festivals as well as concert recordings for BBC Radio 3’s Jazz Now and in session for Radio 3’s J-Z.

WHO'S PLAYING?

Sara Oschlag - vocals

Danish-born Brighton resident Sara Oschlag has quietly established herself as one of the UK’s premier jazz vocalists. She is a regular performer at leading jazz festivals and venues, including Ronnie Scott’s, Love Supreme Festival, Jazz at The Lincoln Center and The Pheasantry in Chelsea.

Sara is equally at home in the role of band leader and is a much-in-demand special guest, she has recently appeared as a featured vocalist with Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Orchestra, Pete Long’s Echoes of Ellington Big Band and Arnie Somogyi’s Scenes in The City Band, and duetted with US trumpet/vocal star Benny Benack III for Brighton Jazz Festival.Sara’s honest stage presence and effortless sense of swing have made her a firm favourite with jazz audiences across the UK

. She has been hailed a ‘musician’s singer’ due to her wonderful way of using dynamics, texture and rhythm to sing the songs. An effortlessly hip, intelligent interpreter of songs in the jazz tradition, her vocal influences include Sarah Vaughan, Betty Carter, Anita O’Day, Shirley Horn, Cecile McLorin Salvant., and of course Ella Fitzgerald.

“Sara’s stylish, imaginative phrasing and insouciant verve blew everyone away”– Jon Newey – Jazzwise editor

Pete Long - clarinet/sax

Pete’s career began fairly inauspiciously at the age of 18 deep within the bowels of the Nat West bank in Marble Arch putting bank statements into envelopes. An unfortunate incident involving a picture of a lady and a horse being accidentally sent to the Convent of the Sacred Heart along with their financial records led to a re-think and a few days later, Pete had enrolled at the Royal London College Of Music. After a couple of years of hard study, ruthless self-denial and curry, Pete was out on the road with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, and during his time there, got to play all five saxophone parts, the solo flute part, the bass guitar, and on one rather messy occasion, the fourth trumpet. Having the unusual inclination to play modern jazz on the rather “old-fashioned” Clarinet led to several works for Clarinet and big band being commissioned during his stay, and established a tradition of Clarinet solos in NYJO which has plagued the saxophone section ever since.

After the apprenticeship had been served, fame and endless riches were only around the corner in the form of the John Simons Rhumba Showband on the QE2, and Pete’s orange frilly flamenco shirtsleeves and sassy sombrero became one of the familiar sights in the bars, clubs and clinics around the ports of the Caribbean Sea. At this time, Pete acquired the knack of bandleading, assembling ad-hoc ensembles on the ship for various passenger and crew functions. Serious playing work followed on the return to Blighty, as the award winning Sax Quartet “Itchy Fingers” had a job going on Alto Sax. Pete passed the audition, and toured Brazil, Venezuela, North Africa, Russia and Europe during his three year stay there, working with, amongst others, Dizzy Gillespie, John Scofield, Chick Corea and Supersax.

Due to an inspired bit of orchestral management by “a friend”, The bulk of Pete’s work for the next six years was in and around the West End theatres, where his versatility on many different woodwind instruments has stood him in good stead, most notably on the notorious Clarinet solo in the closing sequences of the hit show “Oliver”. During this time, Pete developed an interest in the Oboe, and after a rigorous six-hour a day practice schedule for several months, no calls at all came flooding in, and the oboe went forlornly back under the bed. Some time later, a call came to play a session doubling baritone sax and oboe. That session was for “Handbags and Gladrags” for the hit Welsh beat combo “Stereophonics” and the single held a chart position in Europe for the next eighteen months, becoming the single best selling recording in the UK for 2002, a sales figure no doubt boosted by its use as the theme for the comedy series “The Office”.

A five-year stint playing and arranging for with Jools Holland’s Rhythm and Blues Orchestra, saw Pete working with Tom Jones, Norah Jones, Solomon Burke, Dr. John, Lulu, Georgie Fame and Lionel Richie, to name but a few, and producing arrangements for John Cale, Texas, Sir Paul McCartney, Candi Staton, Marti Pellow and Chrissy Hynde. Pete is also the first musician in Europe to use the Tubax commercially, on a Ringo Starr track, and much more recently with The Guillemots.

Over the last couple of years, Pete’s career has divided into three distinct streams- as an educator, working in master classes and as soloist with young musicians all over Britain, from the furthest point of West Wales to the orchestras at the Royal Academy, The Guildhall and the Royal College. In conjunction with this work, Pete has helped develop a new series of student woodwind instruments with a leading UK Manufacturer. As a jazz soloist, Pete has appeared with resident trios in the provinces, and has often been caught at Ronnie Scott’s, in London’s West End.

It is however, as a bandleader and orchestrator that Pete spends most of his time currently, and directing the Big Band at Ronnie Scott’s alongside his own projects. These include his award-winning repertory orchestra Echoes Of Ellington, whose 2018 album “The Jazz Planets” won the Times “Must Have Jazz CD Of The Year”. Further commissions have involved a re-imagining of Swan Lake in the style of Duke Ellington, and a transcription and re-orchestration of “The Days Of Future Passed” for the Moody Blues. In the course of this work, Pete has provided musicians and arrangements for Claire Sweeney, Jane MacDonald, Humphrey Lytlleton, Sir John Dankworth, the entire cast of Emmerdale (!) and a host of others.

Colin Good - piano

At the age of 11 Colin became choral scholar at Magdalen College School, Oxford. In the 1980s he studied composition and keyboards at Oxford University and, all the while, he was developing his jazz playing and arranging skills in the clubs of London.Over the next decade, Colin worked as player, composer and arranger, mixing TV and theatre work with his role as musical director of the 30's-style orchestra Vile Bodies.

He was enlisted as pianist and musical director on the Roxy Music reunion tour 2001. Colin has gone on to work closely with Bryan Ferry in arranging and production for some of the 'Frantic' album and is also the pianist & musical director on the 'Frantic' 2002 tour.

Influenced by Earl Hines and Teddy Wilson, Colin is an internationally renowned authority on the jazz piano stylings of the 1920s and 1930s. His career has seem him tour with ensembles such as The Ink Spots and he is the musical director and pianist in the Brian Ferry Orchestra, whose music was featured on the soundtrack to the 2013 Hollywood blockbuster The Great Gatsby.

Dele Sosimi Afrobeat Quintet

Dele Sosimi Afrobeat Quintet

Dele Sosimi, the Nigerian-British Afrobeat Ambassador, Musician and Educator, has been at the heart of the global Afrobeat scene since relocating to the UK in December 1995. Having started his musical career with Fela's Egypt 80 band in his teens, he then teamed up with childhood friend Fela's son Femi Kuti (back in the late eighties) to kick start the Positive Force - touring, recording and performing worldwide. Over forty years later, he remains a tireless ambassador for the unique musical movement all over the world. His blend of complex funk grooves, traditional Nigerian music, African percussion and an underlying sense of jazz combines with his virtuoso keyboard skills and rhythmic singing to make him one of the most respected Afrobeat authorities of his era.

Hackney-born and UK-based Dele has performed all over the planet, from the Montreux Jazz Festival to Mawazine Festival in Rabat Morrocco; Ollin Khan in Mexico, South Korea and the Copenhagen Jazz Festival to name a few. London's Jazz Café has said before “we're honoured that for so long we've been able to call Jazz Café the home of Dele's seminal afrobeat orchestra.” Dele was also Afrobeat music consultant for the National Theatre's production of Fela!, often performed with the late great Tony Allen.

"The love and passion I have for composing, writing, performing and teaching Afrobeat Music is my main motivation," says Dele, adding; "my aim is to build upon the rich heritage of music worldwide by creating opportunities for young people to learn. I want them to experience Afrobeat forms of music and music-making activities that will expand knowledge and broaden the horizons of the musicians young or old."

For those of you who follow the ‘World’ Music scene in the UK, Justin Thurgur will also be a familiar face; through his long term collaborations with both the Afrobeat Maestro Dele Sosimi and with Kishon Khan, plus working with the likes of Afrobeat drum legend Tony Allen and Cuban giants Julito Padron and Giraldo Piloto, he has cemented a place at the forefront of that community.
