WHO'S PLAYING?

Alan Barnes - sax/clarinet

Alan Barnes is a prolific international performer, composer, arranger, bandleader and touring soloist. He is best known for his work on clarinet, alto and baritone sax, where he combines a formidable virtuosity with a musical expression and collaborative spirit that have few peers.

His range and brilliance have made him a “first call” for studio and live work since his precocious arrival on the scene more than thirty years ago.

His recorded catalogue is immense. He has made over thirty albums as leader and co-leader alone, and the list of his session and side-man work includes Bjork, Bryan Ferry, Michel LeGrande, Clare Teale, Westlife, Jools Holland and Jamie Cullum. He has toured and played residencies with such diverse and demanding figures as Ruby Braff, Freddie Hubbard, Scott Hamilton, Warren Vache, Ken Peplowski, Harry Allen and Conte Candoli.

In British jazz, the young Barnes was recognized – and hired – by the established greats of the time: Stan Tracy, John Dankworth, Kenny Baker, Bob Wilber, and Humphrey Lyttelton. But he is equally respected for his longstanding and fruitful collaborations with contemporaries such as David Newton, Bruce Adams, and Martin Taylor.

Alan Barnes’s unique musicianship, indefatigable touring, and warm rapport with audiences have made him uniquely popular in British jazz. He has received over 25 British Jazz Awards, most recently in 2014 for clarinet, and has twice been made BBC Jazz Musician of the Year.

“His stylistic range is quite phenomenal… He has a wonderful capacity for suggesting a given style without actually imitating anyone.” Dave Gelly, Masters Of The Jazz Saxophone.

David Newton - piano

Growing up in Renfrewshire, Scotland, Newton had a musical upbringing with the piano trio sound of Peterson, Tatum or Garner an ever-present feature in the Newton household.

After graduating from Leeds College of Music in 1979 David Newton freelanced around Yorkshire and eventually became a resident musician at the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough for two and a half years. A move to Edinburgh followed where theatre work using local musicians quickly led to an established position on the Scottish jazz scene but after some four years there, his old roommate from college, Alan Barnes, persuaded him to move to London where he rapidly became a much sought after pianist teaming up with Barnes, guitarist Martin Taylor and saxophonist Don Weller.

Newton's recording career had begun in 1985 with Buddy De Franco and Martin Taylor and his first solo album was released in '88 in association with producer Elliot Meadow who oversaw the next nine years of recording for Linn Records followed by Candid Records. Once again, in 1997, David Newton and Alan Barnes teamed up and together with Concorde Label agent Barry Hatcher, made four CDs for that label. By 2003, Newton had learned a great deal of the ways a record company operated and he set up a business partnership with former pupil Mike Daymond and they established "Brightnewday Records" initially as a vehicle for Newton's own music but with an eye to opening up the catalogue to other artists later on.

In the first five years of the nineties, Newton's reputation as an exquisite accompanist for a singer, spread rather rapidly and by '95 he was regularly working with Carol Kidd, Marion Montgomery, Tina May, Annie Ross, Claire Martin and of course Stacey Kent, with whom he spent the next ten years recording and travelling all over the world. While all this was going on, Newton was composing music which he would record on his own CDs as well as writing specifically for Martin Taylor, Alan Barnes, Tina May or Claire Martin and Newton's music can now be heard on many television productions, especially in the United States where over twenty TV movies benefit from Newton's haunting themes. In 2003, after a twenty year gap, David Newton was reunited with playwright Alan Aykbourn having been involved with eight world premiers in Scarborough and London back in the early eighties, and he was asked to write the music for two new productions, 'Sugar Daddies' and 'Drowning on Dry Land'. Currently, with the release of a new CD called "Portrait of a Woman", on the 'Brightnewday' label, David Newton is relishing the musical freedom of his Trio and the special sound it makes whilst working on two other new recording projects, as an arranger and a composer.

David Newton has been voted best Jazz Pianist in the British Jazz awards for the thirteenth time in 2014 and was made a Fellow of Leeds College of Music in 2003..

Justin Thurgur’s Afro Jazz Project - featuring Dele Sosimi

For those of you who follow the ‘World’ Music scene in the UK, Justin Thurgur will be a familiar face; through his long term collaborations with both the Afrobeat Maestro Dele Sosimi and with Kishon Khan, plus working with the likes of Afrobeat drum legend Tony Allen and Cuban giants Julito Padron and Giraldo Piloto, he has cemented a place at the forefront of that community.

His own project has taken this experience and combined it with his love of the likes of Miles Davis, Lee Morgan, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Coltrane, et al…. to create a powerful ‘Global’ Jazz project.

WHO'S PLAYING?

Dele Sosimi (keys and vocals)

Justin Thurgur (trombone and bv’s

Suman Joshi (bass)

Afla Sackey (percussion and bv’s)

Kunle Olofinjana (drums and bv’s)

Dele Sosimi, the Nigerian-British Afrobeat Ambassador, Musician and Educator, has been at the heart of the global Afrobeat scene since relocating to the UK in December 1995. Having started his musical career with Fela's Egypt 80 band in his teens, he then teamed up with childhood friend Fela's son Femi Kuti (back in the late eighties) to kick start the Positive Force - touring, recording and performing worldwide. Over forty years later, he remains a tireless ambassador for the unique musical movement all over the world. His blend of complex funk grooves, traditional Nigerian music, African percussion and an underlying sense of jazz combines with his virtuoso keyboard skills and rhythmic singing to make him one of the most respected Afrobeat authorities of his era. Hackney-born and UK-based Dele has performed all over the planet, from the Montreux Jazz Festival to Mawazine Festival in Rabat Morrocco; Ollin Khan in Mexico, South Korea and the Copenhagen Jazz Festival to name a few. London's Jazz Café has said before “we're honoured that for so long we've been able to call Jazz Café the home of Dele's seminal afrobeat orchestra.” Dele was also Afrobeat music consultant for the National Theatre's production of Fela!, often performed with the late great Tony Allen. Because he was brought up with Fela's Egypt 80 performing five hour long sets, four days a week, and six hour rehearsals twice weekly, 50 weeks a year, Dele is a master of various live configurations, each offering a truly authentic and powerful Afrobeat sound and keeps him active. These days, his mesmeric performances are mainly with the full eight to fifteen piece Dele Sosimi Afrobeat Orchestra (DSAO), a distilled six or seven-piece Dele Sosimi Afrobeat Experience (DSAE) and the Dele Sosimi Afrobeat Sextet, Quintet & Quartet which features the heartbeat of DSAO in a semi acoustic format with Dele on piano alongside Suman Joshi on Double Bass, Afla Sackey on Congas/percussion and Kunle Olofinjana on Drums. An additional horn player or two make up the Quintet or Sextet. Dele also works with electronic artist Medlar putting out two 12"s during the pandemic, Cubafrobeat, Latin flavoured collective Lokkhi Terra led by Kishon Khan and Eparapo, led by DSAO bassist, composer and producer Suman Joshi.

Redtenbacher’s Funkestra: Brothers In Funk

Stefan Redtenbacher's Funkestra continues the successful BEAT series with an exciting mix of fresh, high energy jazz funk, inspired by the legendary Funk Brothers, Average White Band and Brecker Brothers.

Redtenbacher’s Funkestra is a GO-TO funk monstrosity that consistently delivers a steady groove guaranteed to MAKE YOU MOVE!” – Michael B ( host of ‘Tonic: The Funky Groove Show’ | KGOU FM, Oklahoma)

“Stefan, you know what the Funk is about.” – Fred Wesley (James Brown, Funkadelic, JB Horns)

“Lean, agile, and breathless in its groove” – Jacob Webb ( KEXP | Seattle, Washington)

“A pure slice of unalloyed, joyful Funk.” – Steve Rubie (606 Club London)

“Funk in its classic form remains alive, and Redtenbacher’s Funkestra’s is a stellar example.” – George Graham (WVIA-FM | Scranton, Pennsylvania)

“Stefan Redtenbacher remains one of the most prominent composers, producers and all-round bass monsters in the UK.” – Nick Wells (iBass Magazine, UK)

“Never less than illuminating.” – Steve Morphew (Blues Review, UK)

“The Funkestra’s trademark is mid-tempo funk with just the right amount of bite, rarely abrasive and never toothless, integrating a variety of retro styles.” – David B. Wilson (Wilson & Alroy’s Record Reviews)

“The phrase ‘world class’ can be overused but the multi million streaming Funkestra consist of players with enviable resumes, whose polymath musical skills extend beyond the jazz-funk/fusion world for which they are most famed.” – Mark Ede | BiGiAM Agency

soultime!

SoulTime! Is a new and exciting jazz quartet co-led by renowned pianist Leon Greening and exceptional trumpeter Steve Fishwick.

Dedicated to delving into the repertoire of one of their musical idols, the pianist and composer Bobby Timmons, SoulTime! pays homage to a figure whose influence during the late 1950s and early 60s on Hard-Bop and Soul-Jazz often goes unacknowledged in jazz history.

Bobby Timmons’ compositions, such as ‘This Here’, ‘Dat Dere’, and ‘Moanin’, were pivotal for iconic groups like Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers and The Cannonball Adderley Quintet.

SoulTime! is committed to revitalizing these classics with the original spirit, infusing them with abundant melody, soulfulness, and the infectious grooves that defined the era.

ALICE ZAWADZKI & ROB LUFT LUNCHTIME SERIES

  • St Christopher's Church, Church Green, Haslemere, GU27 1DD (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Loosely connected to the jazz world but realistically inhabiting her own realm, Alice Zawadzki is a vocalist, violinist, songwriter and composer based in London, with considerable repute as “a genuine original” (The Guardian), and a distinctive and individual presence on the creative European music scene. Alice’s rich musical background and “whimsical hyper-creativity” (MOJO Magazine) create a sound which draws upon her early exposure to New Orleans jazz and gospel with the legendary Lillian Boutté who took Alice under her wing and on tour as a teenager, an extensive classical training as a violinist, and a continuous exploration of improvisation, poetry, and folk music from diverse traditions, “all propelled in a voice of velvet suppleness and gutsy emotional power” (The Arts Desk).

Rob Luft is an award-winning 29-year-old jazz guitarist from London whose virtuosity has been compared to that of six-string legends John McLaughlin, Al Di Meola & Paco De Lucia. He was the recipient of the 2016 Kenny Wheeler Prize from the Royal Academy of Music, and he also received the 2nd Prize in the 2016 Montreux Jazz Guitar Competition at Montreux Jazz Festival. His debut album, “Riser”, was released on Edition Records in 2017 to widespread acclaim from the European jazz media. John Fordham wrote in The Guardian that it’s a “very sophisticated debut, but given Luft’s old-soul achievements since his early teens, we should have heard it coming”..

Nat Steele & Mark Crooks sextet play Stan Getz and Cal Tjader

The combination of tenor sax with vibraphone is a particularly warm and luxurious sound, and has been featured very successfully by several leading tenor players including Sonny Rollins (with Milt Jackson) and Joe Henderson (with Bobby Hutcherson).

Stan Getz and Cal Tjader had an especially successful partnership in the late 1950s, leading an all-star sextet including Scott La Faro, Vince Guaraldi, Eddie Duran and on his very first recording drum master Billy Higgins.

The sextet led by tenor player Mark Crooks and vibraphonist Nat Steele celebrate this collaboration, playing selections from their brilliant 1958 album. The sextet perform gorgeous arrangements of standards For All We Know, I’ve Grown Accustomed To Her Face and My Buddy along with swinging originals by Tjader and Guaraldi, Ginza Samba and Big Bear. Getz’s other vibraphone partnerships are also showcased, with selections from his recordings with vibes masters Lionel Hampton and Gary Burton.

Featured in the rhythm section are some of the UK’s finest jazz musicians: guitarist Colin Oxley, bassist Lorenzo Morabito, pianist Matyas Gayer and drummer Mark Taylor.

Bill Laurance

Bill Laurance

Classically trained composer, sought after collaborator and 5 times Grammy award-winning pianist Bill Laurance has built a career uniquely blending genres of music that seem to be at stylistic polar opposites with each other. Originally trained as a classical pianist, Laurance has been demonstrating his unique creativity and improvisation for many years as a founding member of Snarky Puppy.

“A Jazz Maestro” The Guardian

His diverse work includes advertising compositions for Apple, film soundtracks such as "Un Traductor" (2018) and collaborations with renowned ensembles such as the WDR Big Band and the Metropole Orkest. Most recently, he released the highly acclaimed album "Where You Wish You Were" (ACT Music) together with Michael League. His latest release "Affinity" is a tribute to the jazz pianist Bill Evans and shows Laurance's striving for individual interpretations, whereby the piano remains the unifying constant in his versatile work.

WHO'S PLAYING?

Pianist, keyboardist and composer Bill Laurance’s music evokes a striking sense of time and place. As an original member of 5-time Grammy Award-winning group Snarky Puppy, Laurance has toured the world countless times, playing hundreds of concerts to tens of thousands of fans worldwide.

'Bloom', the ACT debut of pianist and composer Bill Laurance as leader, marks the transition from the smallest possible form of musical interaction to a large-scale, broadband format. Following the internationally acclaimed ACT release 'Where You Wish You Were' in duo with multi-instrumentalist and Snarky Puppy bandmate Michael League, Laurance now teams up with Manchester-based 18-piece string orchestra The Untold Orchestra and creates a work of convincingly epic pro-portions. Combining Bill Laurance’s classical sensibilities with jazz, pop grooves, and powerful orchestral synchronicity, 'Bloom' runs the gamut of emotions and moods.

“That’s where the magic is; the space between what is prescribed and what isn’t” says Laurance.

The eponymous opening track of the album impressively demonstrates how organically and naturally, Laurance manages the balancing act between an orchestral sound, the accessibility and groove of pop music and the freedom of jazz: a series of dark, warm string chords introduces a sense of spaciousness and sonic depth.

Featuring his widely lauded improvisational skills, Laurance perfects the balance of straddling virtuosity without becoming self-indulgent. His playing transcends mere technical mastery on the piano, instead weaving these techniques into something that captivates the listener, no matter what music they usually feel at home with. It respects the full instrumentation of his compositions, creating breathing space for each musician to be heard and understood. And so, 'Bloom' ties in with its predecessor album 'Where You Wish You Were', albeit with completely different means: With its vocal and narrative quality, this music creates spaces and dream worlds in which listeners can lose themselves with joy.

How the flint first sparked....

Attending the University of Leeds, he majored in classical composition, exploring jazz, funk and drum’n’bass in addition to classical music. Since then he has honed the melodic immediacy of this approach, along with his intense improvisational prowess, forging a distinctive personal style that embraces English classical, electronica and jazz-rock sensibilities, alongside gritty contemporary grooves.

In the early-noughties, a twenty-something Laurance was trying to make a living on the Leeds music scene, when an unremarkable but timely pick-up gig presented itself with a young Michael League in singer Michael Solomon Williams’ band. Gigs in the north of England forged a friendship with League, who happened to be looking for a new piano player, and League invited Laurance to the US to record the first Snarky Puppy album, The Only Constant, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Since then, Laurance has clocked up recordings and or performances with such renowned artists as David Crosby, Morcheeba, Salif Keita, Terence Blanchard, Susana Baca, Lalah Hathaway, Laura Mvula, Jacob Collier, Musiq Soul Child, Khalid Sansi, Chris Potter, Lionel Loueke, Carlos Malta, The Metropole Orchestra and the WDR Big Band. He has also worked extensively in the dance world with companies including Alvin Ailey, Ballet Rambert, Matthew Bourne's Adventures in Motion Pictures, Phoenix Dance, Northern Ballet Theatre and the English National Ballet. He has also composed music for a variety of different clients including Apple, Sky, Nokia and Hewlett Packard.

He is a champion of cutting-edge keyboard developments and is endorsed by: Moog, Mellotron, Sequential, Korg, Nord, Roli Seaboard, Yamaha, Roland, Arp Odyssey, Keyscape, Sound Brenner, Native Instruments and MXR. Alongside Laurance’s touring as a solo artist and with Snarky Puppy, Laurance is the Artist in residence at Morley College London. He is is a passionate educator and continues to give clinics at music institutions all over the world.

JASON REBELLO

Celebrated British jazz pianist Jason Rebello was labelled a veteran by critics at 19 and over the next decade won most of the major jazz music awards.

“At 21, he’s probably the most gifted and fluent pianist to emerge in Britain since Django Bates” - Neville Hadsley, Jazz FM 1990

Classically trained but inspired by Herbie Hancock, he came to the attention of one of the founders of jazz fusion, Weather Report’s saxophonist Wayne Shorter. Impressed by his musical fluency and style, Shorter produced his No 1 debut album A Clearer View October 1990 Novus PD 90527.

By 1992 Jason’s musical talent and endearing personality enabled him to feature in a wide range of media projects including Artrageous BBC 2 which Janet Street-Porter invited him to present. Popular and confident, Jason chose to produce his second album Keeping Time. He invited a wealth of his musical friends to feature including soul diva Jocelyn Brown and Marianne Jean- Baptiste.

Jason undertook a gruelling schedule promoting his own band across the UK and Europe as well as appearing with notable artistes including Bud Shank, Wayne Shorter, Gary Burton, Branford Marsallis, Tommy Smith, Jean Toussaint, Desree, Mica Paris, Carleen Anderson and Omar. He also performed several classical concerts with the Nice Symphony Orchestra and the Halle Orchestra.

Make It Real July 1994 is Jason’s best-selling album to date. A heady mix of jazz, latin, soul and hip-hop featuring the vocal talents of Maysa Leak, Joy Rose and Cleveland Watkiss and Faithless rapper Maxi Jazz. An inspirational re-working of Gershwin’s Summertime received much radio play and was voted a KISS Classic by KISS Radio. Following a sold out UK tour and European festival dates, The British Council also sponsored a tour of Brazil. The musical partnering of Jason with Joy Rose produced a further album of just piano and voice.

In 1999 Jason travelled to New York to record Next Time Round with his trio featuring Jeff ‘Tain’ Watts and talented British bassist Orlando Le Fleming. The album was a return to acoustic jazz. Following the untimely death in 1998 of piano legend and personal hero Kenny Kirkland, Jason was invited by Sting to take his seat in the band. Jason recorded with Sting on his Grammy winning album Brand New Day 1999 and Sacred Love 2003. He toured the world as part of Sting’s band for 6 years and on the night of September 11 2001, Jason recorded the live DVD and CD All this Time at Sting’s home in Tuscany.

It was through an introduction from Sting that Jason met guitar legend Jeff Beck. Beck was looking for a new keyboard player to follow Jan Hammer. He was keen to recruit Jason, whose keyboard skills and musical versatility complemented Beck’s love to improvise and experiment in the world of fusion. Jason once again toured the world as part of Beck’s band for 6 years, and was introduced to the world of Rock music. He worked together with Beck on his 2010 album Emotion and Commotion and co-wrote the single Hammerhead which won a Grammy for Best Rock Instrumental Performance and was voted a Rock Classic by Planet Rock Radio.

Technique, diversity and adaptability have enabled Jason to work with artists across the musical spectrum such as Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, Pee Wee Ellis, Joss Stone, Madeline Peyroux, Manu Katche and recently Charlene Soraia. In 2007 Jason inspired by family life in Bath embarked on the Jazz Rainbow project. Created as through of a love of teaching and a belief that expression through music is an important part of a child”s development, Jason has worked nationally to promote learning through musical workshops in schools. The project resulted in Jazz Rainbow November 2007, a charming reinvention of much loved children”s tunes the whole family could enjoy.

In 2103 Jason released “Anything but Look” featuring Omar, Will Downing, Jacob Collier, Joy Rose, Pino Palladino, Troy Miller, Paul Stacey, Jeremy Stacey, Miles Bould, George Rebello, Xantone Black.

His latest solo piano CD ‘Held‘ on Edition Records won best new CD in the 2016 British Jazz Awards. In 2018 he recorded on Tim Garland’s Album ‘Weather Walker‘.

Jason continues to teach, lecturing at various schools and music colleges including The Guildhall School of Music and Bath Spa University. He also helped to set up the Jazz Factory at the Wiltshire Music Centre.

“In terms of sheer ability and potential, Jason is probably the finest young jazz musician this country has produced. His playing has great poise and maturity, which is unusual in somebody so young.” Stuart Nicholson, author Jazz: The Modern

NEW ORLEANS JAZZ FOr heritage open day

  • The Guildhall, 131 High Street Guildford Surrey GU1 3AA (map)

A rare opportunity to step inside Abbott’s Hospital as part of Guildford’s Heritage Open Day with live jazz in the Courtyard from The Alvar Treefrogs !

Born out of an idea to breathe life into music long forgotten, music that made the streets of New Orleans a place to dance and party to in the 20s, 30s and 40s, music that is so hip you’ll want to hop around and dance to it.

The band was born on Alvar Street, New Orleans, where one night, tired and happy, we listened to the Treefrogs singing their song. It then took 8 years to find the right musicians and to get the music just right. The players needed to swing, sing and love a frog based pun. We found them!!! Ever wanted to sing about eggs and butter, about Garbage Men, about your Aunt Tilly? We are your band!!

Entry is free, just come in and listen anytime between 2.15 and 4pm
