James Davison & Callum Au Quintet

An exciting quintet led by two highly regarded, award-winning young jazz musicians, trumpeter James Davison and trombonist Callum Au, with an evening of fun, swinging, music bringing the atmosphere and vibe of 50’s and 60’s jazz to life for the modern day.

Broadly inspired by the music of the classic 1960s Clark Terry/Bob Brookmeyer Quintet, the band plays a selection of hard-swinging originals and covers of some of the best of the Terry/Brookmeyer repertoire.

With the superb duo of Sam Watts (Jason Marsalis) on piano and Matt Skelton (John Wilson Orchestra) on drums, and Marianne guesting on bass.

Expect an evening of joyous, soulful, swinging music, at which you can’t help but smile!

Justin Thurgur’s Afro Jazz Project - featuring Dele Sosimi

For those of you who follow the ‘World’ Music scene in the UK, Justin Thurgur will be a familiar face; through his long term collaborations with both the Afrobeat Maestro Dele Sosimi and with Kishon Khan, plus working with the likes of Afrobeat drum legend Tony Allen and Cuban giants Julito Padron and Giraldo Piloto, he has cemented a place at the forefront of that community.

His own project has taken this experience and combined it with his love of the likes of Miles Davis, Lee Morgan, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Coltrane, et al…. to create a powerful ‘Global’ Jazz project.

WHO'S PLAYING?

Dele Sosimi (keys and vocals)

Justin Thurgur (trombone and bv’s

Suman Joshi (bass)

Afla Sackey (percussion and bv’s)

Kunle Olofinjana (drums and bv’s)

Dele Sosimi, the Nigerian-British Afrobeat Ambassador, Musician and Educator, has been at the heart of the global Afrobeat scene since relocating to the UK in December 1995. Having started his musical career with Fela's Egypt 80 band in his teens, he then teamed up with childhood friend Fela's son Femi Kuti (back in the late eighties) to kick start the Positive Force - touring, recording and performing worldwide. Over forty years later, he remains a tireless ambassador for the unique musical movement all over the world. His blend of complex funk grooves, traditional Nigerian music, African percussion and an underlying sense of jazz combines with his virtuoso keyboard skills and rhythmic singing to make him one of the most respected Afrobeat authorities of his era. Hackney-born and UK-based Dele has performed all over the planet, from the Montreux Jazz Festival to Mawazine Festival in Rabat Morrocco; Ollin Khan in Mexico, South Korea and the Copenhagen Jazz Festival to name a few. London's Jazz Café has said before “we're honoured that for so long we've been able to call Jazz Café the home of Dele's seminal afrobeat orchestra.” Dele was also Afrobeat music consultant for the National Theatre's production of Fela!, often performed with the late great Tony Allen. Because he was brought up with Fela's Egypt 80 performing five hour long sets, four days a week, and six hour rehearsals twice weekly, 50 weeks a year, Dele is a master of various live configurations, each offering a truly authentic and powerful Afrobeat sound and keeps him active. These days, his mesmeric performances are mainly with the full eight to fifteen piece Dele Sosimi Afrobeat Orchestra (DSAO), a distilled six or seven-piece Dele Sosimi Afrobeat Experience (DSAE) and the Dele Sosimi Afrobeat Sextet, Quintet & Quartet which features the heartbeat of DSAO in a semi acoustic format with Dele on piano alongside Suman Joshi on Double Bass, Afla Sackey on Congas/percussion and Kunle Olofinjana on Drums. An additional horn player or two make up the Quintet or Sextet. Dele also works with electronic artist Medlar putting out two 12"s during the pandemic, Cubafrobeat, Latin flavoured collective Lokkhi Terra led by Kishon Khan and Eparapo, led by DSAO bassist, composer and producer Suman Joshi.

soultime!

SoulTime! Is a new and exciting jazz quartet co-led by renowned pianist Leon Greening and exceptional trumpeter Steve Fishwick.

Dedicated to delving into the repertoire of one of their musical idols, the pianist and composer Bobby Timmons, SoulTime! pays homage to a figure whose influence during the late 1950s and early 60s on Hard-Bop and Soul-Jazz often goes unacknowledged in jazz history.

Bobby Timmons’ compositions, such as ‘This Here’, ‘Dat Dere’, and ‘Moanin’, were pivotal for iconic groups like Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers and The Cannonball Adderley Quintet.

SoulTime! is committed to revitalizing these classics with the original spirit, infusing them with abundant melody, soulfulness, and the infectious grooves that defined the era.

Nat Steele & Mark Crooks sextet play Stan Getz and Cal Tjader

The combination of tenor sax with vibraphone is a particularly warm and luxurious sound, and has been featured very successfully by several leading tenor players including Sonny Rollins (with Milt Jackson) and Joe Henderson (with Bobby Hutcherson).

The sextet led by tenor player Mark Crooks and vibraphonist Nat Steele celebrate this collaboration, playing selections from their brilliant 1958 album. The sextet perform gorgeous arrangements of standards For All We Know, I’ve Grown Accustomed To Her Face and My Buddy along with swinging originals by Tjader and Guaraldi, Ginza Samba and Big Bear. Getz’s other vibraphone partnerships are also showcased, with selections from his recordings with vibes masters Lionel Hampton and Gary Burton.

Featured in the rhythm section are some of the UK’s finest jazz musicians: guitarist Colin Oxley, bassist Lorenzo Morabito, pianist Matyas Gayer and drummer Mark Taylor.

Matt Wates Sextet

This great six piece band, boasting a 3 horn front line, is quite brilliant!

Matt Wates’ swinging, accessible music has been described as "an infectious blend of Jazz Messengers-style bebop and West Coast cool, with some funky rhythm and blues thrown in". A favourite at festivals, jazz clubs and concert halls throughout Europe,, the music is a wonderfully melodic mix of classic jazz standards and beautifully arranged originals performed by some of the finest players on the scene.

Featuring Matt Wates - alto sax, Martin Shaw -trumpet/flugelhorn, Andy Panayi - tenor sax, Leon Greening - piano, Matt Skelton - drums, Marianne Windham - bass

“On style, the sextet certainly resembles many of the great small bands of the 50s and 60s, such as those of Horace Silver and Art Blakey. We take inspiration from the past, but we are not trying to replicate it, merely to add in a small way to the music for which we have the deepest respect and love.” – Matt Wates, Alto Saxophonist, Band Leader and Composer

"In his modest way, Matt Wates is a bit of a phenomenon” – Dave Gelly, Observer

Elegant and affectionately crafted…the soloing is very high class” The Guardian

WHO'S PLAYING?

Nicolas Meier – electric acoustic guitars

Alex Hutton - piano

Marianne Windham – Double Bass

Demi Garcia - drums & percussion

UK based guitarist Nicolas Meier has carved a reputation out as one of the world's most original and uniquely talented guitarists. Drawing from a love of Turkish, Eastern & Middle Eastern music, Flamenco, Tango and more, all mixed with jazz, Meier's versatility and musical fluency extends well beyond that. So much so, that his considerable talents drew the attention of rock guitar legend, Jeff Beck, who made Nicolas a mainstay in The Jeff Beck Group carrying him on two world tours during the course of the last several years.

Meier originally hails from Switzerland. Born in 1973, to parents who are great lovers of the arts. Never short on ambition, Meier founded his own record label, MGP Records, in 2009. To date, he's produced twelve albums as a solo artist and in various group formats (The Nicolas Meier Group, Nicolas Meier Trio, Eclectica!, Nicolas Meier World Group). He has also produced albums with his heavy metal band, Seven7 and in a duo format with long-time partner, fellow guitarist and collaborator, the fabulous UK master, Pete Oxley. Their 2015 release Chasing Tales was a masterful benchmark album in the dual-guitar format.

Meier’s sound is rooted in his love of playing jazz on acoustic guitar, especially his Godin nylon-string guitar. It’s a sound that lends itself especially well to flamenco and middle-eastern music, and conveniently so as these influences and more, are brilliantly fused in his unique multi-lingual style. He also plays fretless acoustic guitar, the Saz (a traditional Turkish stringed instrument), electric guitar, steel-string acoustic guitar, glissentar (an 11-stringed fretless insturment) and a baglama. By 2022 a new World Group studio album called Magnificent came out. A 3 CD package including Live and Stories! To promote this release, lots of UK concerts and a European tour of 11 dates opening for rock guitar legend Steve Vai.

WHO'S PLAYING?

Freddie Gavita

A graduate of the Royal Academy of Music and the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, Freddie Gavita is establishing an impressive reputation as one of the top trumpeters on the UK jazz scene.

First attracting notice as a soloist with the BBC Big Band with whom he appeared twice at the BBC Proms, Freddie has gone on to work with an enviable array of high profile artists including Jon Hendricks, Gregory Porter, Curtis Stigers, Paloma Faith and the Ronnie Scott’s All Stars, and winning the British Jazz Award for ‘Best Trumpet’ in 2017.

Tom Cawley

Tom Cawley is one of the UK’s leading jazz pianists. He has performed worldwide - in major clubs, venues and festivals – with some of the country’s leading artists, most notably Peter Gabriel, with whom he has also recorded two albums and a live DVD. As an artist in his own right he has performed, recorded and broadcast extensively over the last ten years/

As well as an award-winning pianist, Cawley is also a composer, bandleader and educator. His group, Curios, won Best Band the 2008 BBC Jazz Awards, and their three albums have been hugely critically acclaimed – described as “extraordianary” in MOJO, “spellbinding” in The Independent, “fantastic” in Time Out and “a shining light for British jazz” in Musician magazine. They have performed at the Barbican, the Royal Festival Hall, Ronnie Scott’s and at all of the UK’s major jazz festivals, as well as in Europe (most notably at North Sea Jazz).

As a freelance jazz piano player, Tom regularly leads the house band at Ronnie Scott's club, and he is also a professor of jazz piano at the Royal Academy of Music.

Mark Taylor

In 1995 UK drummer Mark Taylor moved to New York at the invitation of US musician Lew Tabackin and ended up staying for more than 25 years! In a long and impressive career his powerful, swinging, playing has been heard alongside the likes of Joe Henderson, Ronnie Scott, George Coleman, Chet Baker, Roy Hargrove, Woody Shaw, Geoff Keezer, Mulgrew Miller, Monty Alexander, Billy Eckstine & Anita O’Day…and you don’t get to play with a team of iconic musicians like that unless you are very, very, good!

Having recently returned to the UK, it’s with enormous pleasure that we welcome Mark for his first visit to the Pavilion!

WHO'S PLAYING?

joanna eden

Joanna has loved all-things Ella since growing up in Lincolnshire listening to her RAF Musician Dad John’s record collection. “Ella was the soundtrack of my childhood. Her voice has such a warm quality that I immediately feel calm and soothed when I hear it. I’ve called the show Embraceable Ella because I love her rendition of Gershwin’s ‘Embraceable You’ and because her voice feels like an embrace; a lovely warm hug!”

Ella Fitzgerald’s popular nickname “First Lady of Song” betrays the deep affection and admiration audiences had for her work. On her death at 79 years of age in 1996, the New York Times called her simply “the voice of jazz”. Her six decade career took Ella from smoky clubs in Harlem to the Carnegie hall, to concert halls in Europe and - thanks to her virtuosic, heartfelt and intimate recordings - into living rooms all over the world.

Joanna Eden’s ability to combine jazz vocal dexterity with heartfelt emotion and great storytelling gives her all the skills necessary to pay a fitting tribute to such a legendary artist. She also has a fantastic band to accompany her in the form of the Chris Ingham Trio featuring Chris Ingham on piano, George Double on drums and Marianne WIndham on bass.

Joanna has performed her show ‘Embraceable Ella’ all over the world receiving standing ovations and even generous praise from Ella’s curator at the Smithsonian Museum, John Hasse.

WHO'S PLAYING?

SUE RICHARDSON

Since being tipped for the top by Jazzwise magazine, Sue Richardson’s career has gone from strength to strength. Her most recent album, Too Cool, The Life & Music of Chet Baker, cemented her position in the jazz world – gaining four and five star reviews in the jazz press as well as internationally and sell out gigs at Ronnie Scott’s. It was also in The Sunday Times 100 Best Records of The Year 2013.

“Sue Richardson’s trumpet playing catches [Baker’s] combination of delicacy and strength, and her singing has something of his candid simplicity. She even writes the kind of tunes that he might have invented.” **** The Observer

Recently Sue has been performing with Ian Shaw (she guested on his current album dedicated to the work of Fran Landesman) and they performed a sold-out duo show of jazz standards bringing together all elements of their talents. Sue has ALSO been honoured to work with The Humphrey Lyttelton Band. Clive Davis writing in The Times compared her style to Humph’s: “When the cast of I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue led a high-spirited tribute to the late Humphrey Lyttelton at the Hammersmith Apollo, the trumpeter Sue Richardson was among the many musicians who helped to give the old man a stirring send-off. Some of his insouciant comic timing seems to have rubbed off on her as well: she is a breezy presence on the bandstand who is quite happy to make self-deprecating asides about the everyday problems of finding a lipstick that doesn’t leave sediment inside her horn. More to the point, she also possesses something of Hump’s flair for constructing a concise, neatly crafted melody. If Chet Baker and Clifford Brown are two of her main role models - her timbre is warm and full-bodied - her soloing, while avoiding high-note theatrics, evokes the generosity and exuberance of players from the swing era.” The Times

Touring with big bands by the age of 16, Sue’s musical journey has seen her gigging in over 50 countries in hotels, jazz clubs and on cruise ships. You can even hear her recorded version of The Girl From Ipanema being played in Rio in the famous bar where the song was written. She has worked for the BBC, performing at The Last Night of The Proms, and her gigs are a great combination of her original songs and imaginatively reworked standards, revealing her love of mainstream and 1950s jazz. The musicians in the band also take centre stage with well thought-out solo spots. The tightly-knit band have taken their special brand of modern jazz with a mainstream twist to many venues on the national and international circuits.

JO FOOKS

Born in Edinburgh, Jo began learning the saxophone at 15. After winning 'The Young Scottish Jazz Musician of the Year' she went on to study saxophone at the Guildhall School of music in London and also studied at the Berklee School of music in Boston after receiving a full fee scholarship for the summer jazz programme.

After recording her debut album "Here and Now!", the legendary British trumpeter Humphrey Lyttelton invited her to join his eight-piece band, with whom she toured and performed in some of the most amazing theatres and venues in Britain. Humphs fun filled and melodic approach to music was to be a huge influence. And through performing in his band Jo also recorded and worked with Acker Bilk and played alongside Tina May, Joe Temperley, Scott Hamilton, Elkie Brooks, and many others. Jo's other influences include Illinois Jacquet, Sonny Rollins, Dexter Gorden, Stan Getz and Cannonball Adderley. Her mellow tone is reminiscent of Stan Getz and Zoot Simms.

NEAL RICHARDSON

Neal is a powerful and rhythmic piano/vocalist playing jazz, blues and originals, and an award-winning Producer. A professional musician for over 25 years, Neal cut his teeth performing in jazz clubs, hotels, and on cruise ships in over 50 countries, from Rio to Raffles, Norway to New Orleans, Vietnam to Venezuela. He has entertained Royalty, Hollywood celebrities and VIPs at world-renowned venues, including a private party for George Clooney on his yacht at the Cannes Film Festival. Neal’s arrangements and original compositions display his wide-ranging tastes and influences, and he and his band have a great swinging style influenced by Oscar Peterson, Nat King Cole and Gene Harris. He has played in the London Jazz Festival many times, including launching his debut album “Better Than The Blues”, and selling out Ronnie Scott’s. His “Not” King Cole show sold out performances in the London Jazz Festival twice, garnering excellent reviews in the jazz Press, and headlined two Festivals in Germany in 2022 and 2023.

As a Producer he has made 20 albums for various jazz artists, including two at London’s Abbey Road Studios, and ran his own award-winning Label, Splash Point Records, for 20 years, winning 3 BBC Jazz Awards. He now runs the hugely popular Splash Point Jazz Club nights (@splashpointjazz), and heads-up Splash Point Music Ltd.

Zoe Gilby: “Pannonica”

Winner of Parliamentary Jazz Awards Jazz Vocalist Of The Year 2019

Performing lyrical interpretations of the quirky, complex compositions from the legendary pianist and composer, Thelonious Monk. Originally inspired by the 1988 Carmen McRae album “Carmen Sings Monk” with lyrics penned by Jon Hendricks, Abbey Lincoln, Mike Ferro and Bernie Hannighen. Zoe details this performance with an informative, fascinating time line of Thelonious and Carmen’s career including the story behind ‘Pannonica’ written in honour of the Jazz Baroness, patron of bebop, Kathleen Annie Pannonica de Koenigswarter.

Along with Zoe Gilby’s unique vocal phrasing, a distinctive deep understanding and appreciation of Monk and McRae’s work is the highlight of this exceptional project. With Terence Collie on piano, Marianne WIndham on double bass and Alex Goodyear on drums.

“A sparkling, luminescent Zoe Gilby delighted a full house with expressive singing and many insights into the making of McRae’s late-career recording and the lives of the bop era musicians associated with Thelonious Monk and their loyal patron ‘Pannonica.’”

“Beautifully crafted, powerful and highly inventive solos from this incredible accompanying rhythm section” Bebop Spoken Here

“Zoe Gilby who revitalised Thelonious Monk’s uniquely familiar compositions via her frenetic, acrobatic and altogether magnetic scat vocals” Southport Jazz Festival, Northern Sky Magazine

WHO'S PLAYING?

South African harmonica player/pianist Adam Glasser brings a great band of leading young British musicians to play his trademark township jazz. Adam’s unique harmonica sound combines his South African roots with many years immersed in the UK jazz scene as well as with SA legends such as Dudu Pukwana and Hugh Masekela, plus with Joe Zawinul, Martha Reeves, Jimmy Witherspoon, Sting and the Eurythmics. This concert series explores rarely heard township jazz standards across a range of great South African composers from Abdullah Ibrahim to Caiphus Semenya, Victor Ndlazilwana and Themba Mkhize.

Adam Glasser is a fluent and impressive jazz pianist leaning towards the “township” feel of his South African background. However, in more recent years, as well as continuing and developing his piano playing, he has reinvented himself as one of Europe’s leading jazz chromatic harmonica players. He has released two critically acclaimed recordings, winning the “Best Modern Jazz Album” award at the 2010 South African Music Awards with his wonderful album “Free at First” while the follow-up, “Mzansi” was also short listed by SAMA in 2012 for “Best Jazz Album”. Adam has performed or recorded with a wide range of artists including Sting, Joe Zawinul, the Eurythmics, Incognito and the Orchestra of the Welsh National Opera. Strongly influenced by his SA roots, Adam is a founder member of the Township Comets and was for many years musical director of the legendary SA vocal group The Manhattan Brothers. In 2014 Adam had the honour of playing several piano dates with iconic SA musician Hugh Masekela (often referred to as the “Father of South African jazz”), which included the opening of the Commonwealth Games.

‘Free at First’, his debut album, won best Jazz album South African Music Awards 2010 and his follow up ‘Mzansi’ was nominated Best Jazz album South African Music Awards 2012. Due for release later this year is Adam’s third album ‘SA & Beyond’. The album is the extraordinary result of a London recording session as he brought together his long time guitarist – the rising UK Star Rob Luft – and one of South Africa’s most significant cutting edge pianists Bokani Dyer.

Accompanying Adam Glasser on harmonica and piano are George Crowley on sax, UK jazz stalwart Steve Watts on bass, and three of the finest cutting edge young jazz virtuosos on the contemporary scene – Ant Law – guitar, George Crowley – sax and Corrie Dick – drums.

“[Adam Glasser]… has brought a truly unique voice and idiom to the constantly evolving language of jazz”… All About Jazz

“the virtuosity and panache associated with practitioners on more conventional instruments… a wholly impressive evening’s music from a man in complete control of his considerable resources”… VortexJazz

“…a unique evening of township jazz and beyond. A joyous affair and resounding success.”…Blues & Soul Magazine

“A composer, keyboardist and harmonica player, Glasser is intense – his tunes are joyful, driving and danceable.”…Jazz Times Review

Sam Braysher is an east London-based jazz saxophonist who has won plaudits for his warm, delicate sound, his deep knowledge of the standard repertoire, and his thoughtful improvisational concept. When leading his own bands he takes a particular interest in interpreting lesser-played items from the American Songbook and jazz canon. His two previous albums as a bandleader to date – both of which feature renowned international collaborators – have been met with glowing reviews from critics around the world: Golden Earrings (Fresh Sound New Talent, 2017) – a duo recording with the New York pianist Michael Kanan – and Dance Little Lady, Dance Little Man (UNIT Records, 2021), with Jorge Rossy (of Brad Mehldau Trio fame) and Tom Farmer.

For this performance Sam is joined by rising star Hungarian pianist Matyas Gayer (Eddie Henderson, Jim Rotondi) and ultra-swinging drummer Steve Brown (Scott Hamilton, Barry Harris) wth Guildford Jazz anchor Marianne Windham on bass

“I can’t think of another alto saxophonist with a sound quite like Sam Braysher’s” **** Dave Gelly, The Observer

“A triumph of intelligence and sentiment from all in this subtly stand-out recording, with a deceptive simplicity that reveals new depths with each listen.” **** Jazzwise

“Braysher’s cool, modernist twist on old songs is just superb” Simon Adams, Jazz Journal

WHO'S PLAYING?

“Fresh, uplifting and cannot help loving the more I listen to every one of the ten works. From the powerfully delivered lead vocals which take me to Senegal, the Trombone solo, tenor sax solo, baritone sax solo, guitar solo all being spot-on where they pop up, to the horn arrangements which create the promise of yet more to come” – Dele Sosimi, Fela Kuti’s Egypt 80

“Yamäya’s debut album, recorded in collaboration with Senegalese singer Khadim Sarr, is an absolute behemoth that fuses afrobeat, griot, ethiopiques, soul and jazz. ROB BARRON TRIO: LEONARD BERNSTEIN REIMAGINED

Leonard Bernstein was one of the titans of music making in the 20th century. His timeless compositions for choirs, soloists and orchestras remain essential parts of the musical canon along with the many great songs he wrote that have now become jazz standards. Among his most memorable creations are his extensive musical theatre compositions of which “West Side Story” is the most famous.

Giving voice to this wide collection, in his original and most creative manner comes Rob Barron with his trio, a creative jazz pianist, who recognises that Bernstein’s imaginative creations give themselves generously to an updated and improvised interpretation.

Rob devotes the first half to “West Side Story”, whilst the second half captures a wide range of music from Bernstein’s “Candide”, “On The Town”, 'Wonderful Town”, “A Quiet Place” and more.

With Special guest, award winning jazz vocalist Emma Smith , who has been making a name for herself as one of as of the finest vocalists to emerge on the London Jazz scene.

“This is classic piano trio jazz at its best.” — B Withderden, BBC Music Magazine

Mark Kavuma & Theo Erskine Quintet

Mark Kavuma is fast becoming one of the best young trumpet players on the British jazz scene. Having been voted best soloist at the very first Essentially Ellington competition in the U.K., Mark managed to land himself two prestigious gigs as guest soloist with Wynton Marsalis and Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra.

Performing his brand new album, Ultrasound, the fifth release under the Banger Factory umbrella, this is a further stride forward toward founder and trumpeter Mark Kavuma’s vision of bringing together seemingly disparate elements from within the bubbling London jazz scene, uniting sounds and players from across generations and creating a unique, exciting, and fresh sound all of its own.

“They blend Thelonious Monk, the soulful 1960s hard-bop jazz style, and sounds from the eclectic London scene. It’s vividly inviting music that brings smiles to jazz traditionalists and newcomers alike” - John Fordham, The Guardian

WHO'S PLAYING?

Mark Kavuma has established himself as a key player in the British Jazz explosion. As leader, he has released three albums, ‘Kavuma’ (2018), voted among the best albums of the year by Downbeat magazine and The Banger Factory (2019), both released with UK record label Ubuntu Music. Mark’s third release is the first offering on his own label ‘Banger Factory Records’, Kavuma and The Banger Factory - Arashi No Ato (2021).

Discover Kavuma’s music and enter a world where vibes, blues and rhythm collide with gospel, soul and spiritual jazz. With over a decade of experience playing the trumpet and keys in London’s rapidly expanding jazz scene, his unique musical alchemy has the means to bring jazz back to the dance floor.

Mark infuses this indelible musical movement with the energy, attitude and swagger of a new generation of creators. He has a unique and distinctive trumpet sound. His lyricism, soulful tone and grace of technique spread infectious joy and mutual excitement among audiences and fellow musicians alike.

Mark’s main outfit, The Banger Factory, is a collective that is contingent upon bringing the people a good time. From a weekly residency in Brixton’s POW, over the last seven years, the band has developed and nourished a truly unmistakable group sound and attracts and features some of the most gifted and engaging musicians on the scene today. “What is more, the band brings together and unifies the local London jazz scene. Spreading love and good vibes.”

A gifted educator and inspirational creative enabler, Mark is an associate Music Leader for the Tomorrow’s Warriors programme, and is also involved in their professional performance ensembles including the acclaimed Nu Civilisation Orchestra, Jazz Jamaica Small band and Jazz Jamaica All Stars. He is also a brass tutor and leader at London based carnival band Kinetika Bloco.

Starting his professional career in his late teens, earlier career highlights include being featured twice with Wynton Marsalis and Jazz at Lincoln Centre Orchestra, touring Europe with the legendary Salif Keita and Less Ambassadeurs and touring the world in Peter Brooke’s Production of ‘The Suit’.

He has recently released a debut piano album: Zaitz & Kavuma – Back To Back (2022) and also released the Kinetika Bloco All stars album, ‘Legacy’ (2021) featuring a host of London’s burgeoning new jazz generation inc. Theon Cross, Nubya Garcia, Ruben Fox, Sheila Maurice Grey and Reuben James, on Banger Factory Records.

“Over recent years, trumpeter Mark Kavuma has been a busy man on London’s jazz scene, establishing his own ensemble, the Banger Factory, cutting five albums with assorted accompanists, and generally rousing the capital’s diverse talents. Kavuma likes inclusion: lineups featuring both old and young, the odd gospel choir, and the community big band Kinetika Bloco, which he credits with nurturing his youthful interest.

His new album, in partnership with tenor saxophonist Theo Erskine, is a more intimate, small group affair, with the pair backed by pianist Noah Stoneman, bassist Michael Shrimpling and drummer Shane Forbes. Ultrasound follows on the heels of 2022’s Warriors, but reaches back to the era when the pandemic had closed down music. Opening track IT celebrates a moment of release. Named for the It Club where Thelonious Monk recorded, it captures Monk’s wry, oblique style. The rest of the album follows in similarly retro manner as it tracks the pandemic era; The Loneliest is wistful, enlivened by Stoneman’s contemplative piano. June welcomes lockdown release with sunny abandon, while The Return of Johnny Bravo and The Day After Tomorrow are exuberant, allowing Kavuma to reaffirm his hard bop credentials while showing his more reflective, soulful side. An enjoyable, upbeat tour.” - Neil Spencer, The Observer

WHO'S PLAYING?

Dennis Rollins

A passionate performer and educator, British trombone player Dennis Rollins MBE has established a reputation as an artist of excellence, and has lent his unique and stylish talents to some of this country's, and indeed the world's top jazz and pop personalities such as Courtney Pine, Maceo Parker, Jamiroquai, US3, The Brand New Heavies, Blur, Monty Alexander, Pee Wee Ellis and Jean Toussaint, amongst others.

As a bandleader, in 2006 his jazz/funk outfit Badbone & Co won a prestigious BBC Jazz Award in the Best Band category. In the following year he picked up both Trombonist of the Year at the British Jazz Awards and Ronnie Scott's Jazz Awards. Dennis was nominated twice in the 2008 Parliamentary Jazz Awards for Jazz Musician of the Year and for Jazz Education; he won the latter.

In his hometown of Doncaster UK, Dennis was given Honorary Freedom of the Borough in recognition of his successful musical career and for his constant inspiration to the regions musical youth. As part of Her Majesty the Queen’s Birthday Honours 2018, Dennis was honoured with an MBE for Services to music. Most recently in June 2022, he was awarded an Honorary Fellowship from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, Wales, UK.

A sought after jazz educationalist, Dennis has worked in collaboration with many of the UK's university and colleges delivering a wide range of music programmes and performance workshops.

Dennis says "Growing up, I was extremely fortunate to have had the most inspiring and dedicated teachers. The skills and compassion I acquired were a result of that education. Teaching feels very natural to me. I feel it's a duty to pass on my musical knowledge to the next generation."

As a recording artist he's currently recorded 5 critically acclaimed albums. Three with his award-winning band Badbone & Co, and two with his progressive jazz organ-trio, Velocity Trio.

He's proud to be an exclusive endorsee of UK brass instrument maker, Michael Rath Trombones and Argentinian mouthpiece maker Boqar Baro Mouthpieces.

Ross Stanley

Pianist and organist Ross Stanley is a Yamaha artist, Hammond endorsee and two times winner of a British Jazz Award in the organ category. After being awarded an organ scholarship to Marlborough College, Stanley studied at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and since then his musical skills have kept him in high demand, seeing him work with musicians and ensembles such as Eddie Gomez, Seamus Blake, the Hamish Stuart Band, BBC Concert Orchestra, Nostalgia 77 Octet, Tom Jones, Alfie Boe, Maceo Parker, and Pino Palladino.

Corrie Dick

Corrie Dick is the name of a UK-based musician specialising in euphoric, sonically-conscious groove drumming. He is lauded for his touch, uniquely fresh approach to style and melodicism. He is an essential component of any project lead by Laura Jurd including Mercury Prize Shortlisted Dinosaur; provides the intricate and fluent stick work in the Elliot Galvin Trio; brings intense, free colours to Danish powerhouse bassist Jasper Høiby’s exciting Fellow Creatures; writes deep and spiritual music for Blue-Eyed Hawk; and provides the full spectrum of rhythmic elements for guitar wunderkind Rob Luft’s ensemble. He also leads his own joy-inducing supergroup, releasing his debut album with the ensemble in November 2015, selling out concerts across the UK ever since. The album displays Corrie’s striking abilities as composer/lyricist by skilfully fusing Celtic folk and contemporary jazz with new takes on African rhythms.

Since his graduation as a gold medal student from Trinity Laban’s prestigious jazz course, Corrie has honed his playing and composing from his base in South East London’s hub of creativity. The young master of contemporary grooves has studied traditional music in Ghana and Morocco where the rhythm is rich and layered, and also in his home land, Scotland, where rhythm and melody have melded for centuries.

His investigations in rhythm have lead to a series of solo drum and percussion concerts at venues like Vortex and King’s Place. Here he demonstrates untapped perspectives on an instrument that bathes in potential, as Corrie puts it, “here’s an instrument that holds in it a bold combination of cultures - marching bass and snare drum, West-African toms and Turkish cymbals, it’s genius, and it’s healthy to celebrate where these elements came from.”

A winner of no shortage of accolades - Corrie picked up BBC’s ‘Young Scottish Jazz Musician of the Year 2013’ prize, a Mercury Prize 2017 shortlist, Scottish Jazz Awards ‘Up and Coming Artist’ in 2012, countless others during his time at college and has attended countless other award ceremonies as a nominee for the likes of Jazz FM’s ‘Jazz Act of the Year’, and the UK Parliament’s ‘Best Newcomer’ and ‘Album of the Year’ - Corrie owes his talents to the many supportive communities he has himself been crucial to. He is an alumni of both Tommy Smith Youth Jazz Orchestra and the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland and has been mentored by the likes of Mark Guiliana and Kendrick Scott as well as Ghanaian kpanlogo master Saddiq Addy, nephew of the legendary Mustapha Tettey Addy. He has also studied the traditional and modern music of Zimbabwe, Madagascar, Benin and DR Congo alongside his prodigious creative companion, guitarist Rob Luft.

1960s Soul Jazz: The Music of Horace Silver and the Adderley Brothers

1960s Soul Jazz: The Music of Horace Silver and the Adderley Brothers

1960’s Soul Jazz- The music of Horace Silver and the Adderley Brothers

The early 1960's were a particularly good time for those who liked their jazz visceral, melodic and swinging.

Pianist Horace Silver was one of the prime movers in this cause, leading to a genre which critics would later dub “Hard Bop”. His urgent, rhythmic piano style was complemented by his great ear for a catchy tune. Most of his compositions have become core jazz standards, and a few, such as ‘Song For My Father’ have become iconic. Suspended over a panoply of the most infectious groves, it is no surprise that his output has been a rich source of material for any self-respecting Club DJ’s sample bank too.

The show is a whistlestop journey through the amazing output of pianist Horace Silver and the hits of the great Adderley Brothers, all served up with a sizzling degree of heat! Except gems such as Song for My Father, Room 608, Ecorah, The Jody Grind, and The Preacher.

Lineup: PETE LONG alto sax. RYAN QUIGLEY trumpet, SAM WATTS piano, MARIANNE WINDHAM bass, ROD YOUNGS drums.

Whether playing mainstream jazz, world music, or urban contemporary, Rod seamlessly moves from one genre to another, always preserving stylistic conventions whilst bringing creativity and individuality. DIRECTIONS

St John’s Church, Farncombe, Godalming GU7 3EJ

St. John’s Church is situated in St. John’s Street right in the centre of the village just opposite the Co-op store. It was built over 160 years ago and was extensively refurbished in 2012 with new seating, flooring and lighting. It has wonderful acoustics for all types of music as well as a unique atmosphere.

There is no parking at the church itself, but there is some street parking and a number of public car parks within 5 minutes walk of the church. We’d recommend Meadrow car park, just off the A3100 (the Guildford-Godalming road) – the postcode is GU7 3HY. It’s free in the evenings and it’s a short walk direct to the church from the car park, up Church Path.
