We’re very excited to announce that the Wood Street Jazz Festival is back for our 10th year anniversary in 2024! On Sunday 21st July we will be welcoming you to an unforgettable afternoon of soul-stirring jazz performances on the Wood Street Village Green, all in support of Challengers!

The afternoon’s music includes one of the UK’s finest and in-demand swing bands JIVIN’ MISS DAISY and the award winning and absolutely sensational NIGEL PRICE ORGAN TRIO , plus the SOMETHIN’ ELSE BIG BAND and our “rising stars” acoustic stage.

Plus a superb Indian meal, a licenced bar and free parking. Tell your friends, book your tickets, and we’ll see you there!

EVENT INFO

We're looking forward to an amazing afternoon of live music on Wood Street Village Green, from 12.30pm to 5pm (Gates open from 12pm)

Depending on the weather, please bring sunblock, hats, plenty to drink, or brollies! There are also a few spaces available if you want to bring your own gazebo (please contact Challengers to confirm).

There's plenty of on-site parking, disabled toilets and a bar. Feel free to bring a picnic if not ordering an Indian meal, or buy fish and chips from the van on site, and please bring picnic chairs/rugs. There are details at the bottom of the page on how to find us.

Every penny raised at this event supports disabled young people to access play and leisure at Challengers. Thank you very much for your continued support, we look forward to you joining us for an afternoon of Jazz on the green.

Well behaved dogs are welcome on a lead.

Don’t forget to book a slot if you want to bring a gazebo or camper van

There will also be the chance to pre-order food again with a choice of chicken tikka masala or vegetable tikka masala both with sag bhaji, onion bhaji, pilau rice, naan bread & pickles.   Meals are £13 each and we are very grateful for The Shahin Restaurant for donating all of the curries to the event.

Jivin’ Miss Daisy

One of the UK's finest and in-demand swing bands, this fantastic band, led by British Jazz Awards nominee Simon Thorpe, delight their audiences with a wide range of good-time swing, jazz & jive music. With frequent sell out performances at Ronnie Scott’s and other premier London venues, as well as appearances at Festivals all over the country, the band play music from great songwriters including George Gershwin, Duke Ellington and Cole Porter, made famous by artists like Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald and Dean Martin, guaraneeing a swinging party mood!

Nigel Price Organ Trio

Over a career spanning more than 25 years, award winning jazz guitarist Nigel Price has become widely acknowledged as one of the hardest working musicians in the business, Musically, his blend of flowing bebop lines, deep blues sensibility and his mastery of chording continue to delight audiences and fellow musicians alike, and his trio won both the Parliamentary Jazz Award for 'Best ensemble' and the British Jazz Award for ‘Best Small Group’. Ross Stanley is not only one of the greatest ever UK musicians, he also plays a real B3 Hammond Organ complete with 2 Leslie speakers. Joel Barford is the man of the moment and has been causing a stir across the UK and further afield with his incredible drumming ability.

Together they form perhaps the most hard hitting, dynamic and exciting jazz groups on the scene today.

Find your sunglasses and put on your dancing shoes it’s time for some serious summer vibes with the Somethin’ Else Big Band Latin Explosion!! - bring you best Salsa, Samba, Cha Cha and Guajira, it’s gonna be a party !

Featuring Chris Green and Bill Brown on Percussion, Dave Evetts (Drums), Marianne Windham (Bass), Ed Kinsella (Piano), David Ward (Guitar), Sue Coulson, Sue Williams, Claire Cousins, Steph Hinson, Emil Stewart and Martin Hinson (Saxes), Andrew Butcher, Paul Sykes, Roland Knight and Steve Powell (Trombones), Nigel Winter, Matt Nash, Rob Cousins and Graham Varley (Trumpets).

The Carter Harris Quartet

Each member drawing inspiration from their personal influences such as Wynton Marsalis, Marquis Hill, Keith Jarrett, Steve Swallow, Julien Lage and Roy Haynes - this group will deliver a repertoire of pieces written by jazz icons such as Joe Henderson, Charles Lloyd, Bud Powell, and Cole Porter. Featuring Ore F-Souza on trumpet, Herbie Rees on bass, Jad Al-Shakarchy on guitar, and Carter Harris on drums.

5 spoons

5 Spoons is a 6 piece jazz/funk fusion band. We have Michael on bass, Ethan on kit, Joey on keys, Jacob on Guitar, Will on sax and Caitlin on trombone. We enjoy playing funk tunes and take inspiration from bands like vulfpeck, ezra collective and PYJÆN! We’re all big supporters and fans of the London/ Guildford jazz scene!
